Chapter 4 - The Siege of Vale Manor

The sound of shattering glass and heavy automatic gunfire echoed through the lower courtyard, breaking the morning silence. Alarms blared across the estate, red lights pulsing against the dark wood paneling of the halls.

Dominic didn't flinch. Years of war in the city’s underbelly had turned his reflexes into cold, calculated precision. He reached down, lifted Elena smoothly into his arms, and turned to Marco.

"Take her to the safe room behind the wine cellar," Dominic ordered, his voice devoid of any panic. "Seal the blast doors. No one opens them except me."

"No!" Elena cried out, twisting in his arms to grab the lapel of his jacket. "Don't leave me! Please, Dominic!"

Bear barked fiercely, circling Dominic’s legs, sensing the imminent danger.

Dominic looked into Elena’s tear-filled eyes, reaching up to gently brush a stray strand of dark hair from her face. "Listen to me, Elena. I am going to end this today. The men who hurt your father will never hurt anyone again. I need you to go with Marco and protect Bear. Can you do that for me?"

Elena swallowed her sobs, looking at the black iron ring on his hand, then at his unwavering eyes. She gave a single, firm nod. "I'll protect him."

"Good girl," Dominic said. He handed her to Marco. "Go. Now."

As Marco rushed down the hidden stairwell with Elena and the dog, Dominic walked calmly toward the central armory off his private office. He pulled a heavy steel cabinet open, selecting a customized automatic rifle and two tactical sidearms. For twenty years, he had governed from behind desks and in shadowy backrooms, letting his reputation do the heavy lifting. But today, the man who had forgotten how to feel was reminded of what he was fighting for.

He walked down the central staircase into the main grand foyer. The floor was covered in broken glass from the stained-glass windows overlooking the gardens. Outside, three armored SUVs had crashed through the heavy perimeter gates. A dozen mercenaries clad in tactical gear and wearing red armbands were advancing up the front steps, opening fire on Dominic’s security detail.

Dominic stepped into the center of the foyer, taking cover behind a massive marble pillar. He fired with surgical precision, taking down three advancing mercenaries in rapid succession. His men, bolstered by the sight of their legendary leader fighting on the front lines, rallied, holding their positions behind the balconies and stone arches.

Through the smoked glass of the lead SUV, a tall, gaunt man with a scarred neck stepped out, holding a heavy assault rifle. It was Victor Kren himself—the ruthless leader of the Red Sun Syndicate.

"Dominic!" Kren shouted over the deafening noise of gunfire, his voice echoing through the courtyard. "You're fighting for a ghost! Give me the girl and the watch, and I'll leave you your district! Protect her, and I will burn this estate to the ground and bury you beneath it!"

Dominic leaned out from behind the pillar, his eyes cold as ice, his expression unreadable. "You came to my home, Kren," Dominic’s voice boomed through the hall, carried by the architecture's acoustics. "You murdered my brother-in-arms, and you chased a helpless child through the freezing snow. You don't get to leave this city alive."

Dominic signaled to his men on the roof. On his mark, two heavy tactical detonations sounded at the estate gates, cutting off Kren’s retreat. The estate was not merely a house; it was an impenetrable fortress designed for a total siege. Within minutes, Dominic’s outer security teams, who had been alerted at the first breach, flanked Kren’s mercenaries from the tree lines surrounding the property.

Trapped between the estate's formidable structure and the incoming reinforcement squads, Kren’s mercenaries began to panic. The disciplined crossfire swept through the courtyard, dismantling the invading force piece by piece.

Seeing his men fall, Kren realized the operation was lost. He grabbed a smoke grenade from his vest, pulled the pin, and slammed it onto the gravel, creating a dense cloud of grey smoke. He sprinted toward the side entrance of the estate, desperate to find a way inside to take a hostage before he was completely surrounded.

Dominic saw the move immediately. "Cover the courtyard!" he ordered his men, racking his rifle slide as he stepped through the broken doorway into the side corridors, pursuing Kren into the depths of the mansion.
