Chapter 10 - The Last Watch

Fifteen years after the day he brought her home, the grand estate on the hill was filled once again with the bright, joyful sounds of life.

It was a crisp, clear autumn afternoon. The garden was decorated with white flowers, ribbons, and long wooden tables loaded with food and laughter. Friends, community leaders, former security staff, and families from across the city had gathered to celebrate a momentous occasion: Elena’s graduation from veterinary school and her appointment as the director of the city's largest animal protection network.

Old Bear had passed away peacefully two years prior, reaching a ripe old age surrounded by love and comfort. A beautiful bronze statue of the brave brown dog stood proudly in the center of the garden, surrounded by blooming roses—a lasting tribute to the little stray who had defended a child in the dark and changed the fate of a city.

In the house, in his private study on the third floor, Dominic sat by the window. He was older now, his hair completely silver, his face carved with deep, distinguished lines. But his eyes were clear, bright, and completely at peace.

A soft knock came at the door.

"Come in," Dominic said with a warm smile.

The door opened, and Elena stepped into the room. She looked radiant, wearing a simple, elegant white dress, her dark hair styled up, her eyes shining with happiness.

"They're waiting for us downstairs for the toast, Dad," she said softly, using the word she had come to use naturally over the years.

Dominic stood up slowly, stepping across the polished wood floor. He looked at his daughter—no longer the malnourished, terrified child wrapped in a ruined mustard sweater, but a strong, intelligent, compassionate woman ready to lead the city into a brighter era.

"You look beautiful, Elena," Dominic said, his voice brimming with pride.

Elena walked over to him, reaching into her small purse. She pulled out the restored brass pocket watch—the watch that had once held the secrets to an empire, but now held only memories of love and restoration.

She reached out and gently placed the watch in Dominic’s hand, closing his fingers around it.

"I want you to keep it today," Elena whispered, her eyes shining with soft tears. "To remind you of the promise you kept."

Dominic looked down at the brass casing, polished and gleaming, ticking steadily in his palm. He looked back up at her, reaching out with his other hand to pull her into a long, deep embrace.

"I will keep it forever," Dominic murmured against her hair.

They walked out of the study together, side by side, down the grand marble staircase that had once echoed with silence, down into the warm, sunlit garden filled with family, friends, and the bright promise of tomorrow.

The mafia boss who had once ruled through fear had found a little girl and her dog sleeping on a pile of trash. And in doing so, he had found his own redemption, turning a legacy of shadows into an enduring light that would warm the city for generations to come.
