Chapter 8 - Confronting the Past

Summer returned to Austin, exactly one year after the tragic car crash that had almost taken Emily and Leo from me.

We drove back to the intersection where the accident had occurred. The city had since installed a new traffic signal and safety barriers, but for me, the spot still held ghosts.

I stopped the car on the shoulder. Emily stepped out, holding a bouquet of bright yellow marigolds—the flower of remembrance.

She walked to the edge of the road, placed the flowers on the grass, and closed her eyes for a moment of quiet prayer.

"Are you okay?" I asked, coming up behind her and taking her hand.

"I used to feel angry at this spot," she said gently, looking up at the clear blue sky. "I used to think this was where our lives were broken. But now I see it differently. This was where the illusion ended, and our real journey began. I survived, Daniel. We survived."

I squeezed her hand, feeling the ring on her finger—a simple band that represented every promise we had kept to each other.
