Chapter 10 - The Garden We Build Together

Two years later.

The spring morning was crisp and clear. In our backyard, a large garden bed stretched along the wooden fence, lush with blooming red roses, vibrant marigolds, and sweet-smelling herbs.

In the center of the garden stood a young oak tree, grown from a sapling brought directly from the old ranch in Del Rio. At its base, mixed into the local soil, was the dark earth from Lily’s jar.

Two-year-old Leo, with his mother’s dark curls and bright, inquisitive eyes, was running through the grass, chasing butterflies with Lily, who was now nine.

Rosa sat on the patio bench, watching them with a peaceful smile, sipping fresh lemonade.

Emily walked out of the back door carrying a tray of fresh fruit. She looked healthier and more radiant than ever. Her hair caught the morning sunlight, and her laugh echoed across the yard as Leo ran up and tackled her knees.

"Daddy, look!" Leo shouted, pointing at a small green sprout emerging from the soil near the oak tree. "It's waking up!"

I walked over, kneeling down beside my wife and son. I touched the soft green leaf pushing through the earth.

"It sure is, buddy," I said, looking at Emily.

Emily took my hand, locking her fingers in mine, and pressed her cheek against my shoulder.

We had lost time, we had faced darkness, and we had walked through the shadow of death. But looking out at our garden, surrounded by the family we had fought for and the truth that had set us free, I knew our lives were finally whole.

The seed of our happiness had been planted in the darkest earth, but it had grown into a love that would bloom forever.
