Chapter 2 - The Descent into Darkness

The concrete stairs were slick with moisture, and the air grew noticeably colder with every step Emma took downward. The beam of her phone sliced through the gloom, revealing rough-hewn stone walls that predated the modern renovations of the Sterling estate. This was the original foundation of the 19th-century brownstone—a forgotten sub-basement that blueprints conveniently omitted.
"Ethan, keep talking to me," Emma whispered urgently, clutching the railing as she navigated the spiraling descent.
"I'm here... under the floor..." the boy's voice sobbed from somewhere deep beneath the sub-basement floorboards. "She locked me in the box. She said nobody would ever find me... because daddy doesn't love me anymore..."
Hearing those words broke something inside Emma. Ethan was William Sterling's only child, a sweet, sensitive boy who had been inconsolable after his mother's tragic passing six months prior. When Isabella entered their lives, Emma had hoped she would bring warmth back into the mansion. Instead, a heavy, suffocating atmosphere had settled over the estate, culminating in Ethan's sudden, suspicious disappearance.
At the base of the stairs, Emma found herself in a cramped utility chamber lined with exposed steam pipes and electrical conduits. The sound of faint weeping led her to a heavy, reinforced steel door built flush into the stone floor, covered by a heavy iron grate and secured with a massive digital keypad lock.
"Ethan! Can you hear me?" Emma dropped to her knees, pressing her face against the cold metal grate.
"Emma! Down here!"
Through the narrow slits of the iron grate, Emma caught the terrifying sight of two tear-filled eyes staring up from a pitch-black cavity barely large enough for a dog crate. It was a hidden crawlspace beneath the sub-basement floor, sealed entirely from the outside.
"Hold on, sweetheart! I'm going to get you out!" Emma declared, her panic morphing into fierce determination.
She examined the digital lock. It was a high-end biometric and numeric keypad manufactured by Sterling Security Solutions—virtually impenetrable without a master override code. Panic threatened to paralyze her again. How could she possibly open it?
Then, she noticed a faint blue LED indicator blinking rhythmically on the side of the housing unit. A secondary override port was hidden beneath a rubber flap, designed for emergency maintenance personnel. But it required a physical key-card or a direct administrative interface.
Suddenly, a heavy thud echoed from the top of the stairs.
May you like
Emma froze.
The secret door at the top of the stairs had opened. Footsteps—slow, deliberate, and clicking sharply against the concrete—began descending into the dark.
