Chapter 8 - The Fall of Apex Bio-Tech

Three days later, the morning sun broke through the heavy storm clouds, casting a warm, golden light across the courtyard of the city precinct. The national news channels were broadcasting live outside the sleek glass towers of Apex Bio-Tech’s corporate headquarters downtown.
Federal agents and state troopers swarmed the lobby, carrying boxes of confiscated documents, server drives, and hard copies of illegal human trial logs. Michael Carter was led out of the building in handcuffs, his expensive charcoal suit rumpled, his head bowed low to avoid the blinding flashbulbs of a dozen news cameras.
His attempt to flee the country via private airstrip had been thwarted hours earlier by federal marshals acting on the decrypted files recovered from the micro-SD card Emma had hidden in her shoe.
Inside a quiet, sunlit recovery room at Saint Jude’s Hospital, the atmosphere couldn't have been more different.
Emma and Olivia sat side by side on a wide hospital bed propped up against a mountain of fluffy pillows, sharing a massive plate of chocolate chip pancakes and fresh fruit brought in by the nursing staff. Both girls were dressed in bright, colorful new clothes donated by the hospital's community outreach program—no more matching gray hoodies.
Daniel Reed stood near the window, wearing his full dress uniform with his ceremonial badge polished to a mirror shine. He held a large, brightly wrapped cardboard box in his hands.
"Delivery for room 304," Daniel announced with a warm smile as he walked over to the bed.
Emma’s eyes went wide. "Is it for both of us?"
"Open it and find out," Daniel said, setting the box down on the mattress.
Olivia carefully sliced the tape with a plastic butter knife and pulled back the lid. Inside sat a brand-new, top-of-the-line digital art tablet complete with a stylus, sketch pads, and a collection of colorful markers—something Emma had mentioned wanting back at the station during their very first conversation.
"No way..." Emma gasped, looking up at Daniel in disbelief. "Is this really for us?"
"Well, the department took up a collection," Daniel said, rubbing the back of his neck with a slight grin. "And word got around about who the bravest detectives in the city actually were."
Olivia smiled, a genuine, bright smile that reached her eyes for the first time since they had walked into the precinct. She picked up the stylus and immediately began sketching a quick, energetic drawing of two little girls standing side-by-side with a very tall police officer holding a shield.
The door opened softly, and Elena Vance walked in, carrying a thick folder with a bright golden seal.
"I have some official business to take care of," Elena said, her face beaming with warmth. "I spoke with the family court judge this morning. The temporary guardianship transfer has been fully approved."
Emma stopped drawing. "Does that mean... we don't have to go back to the big house?"
"Never again," Elena said softly, walking over and kneeling beside the bed. "You’re going to be placed with a wonderful, loving family who lives right by the park—a family with a golden retriever and a big backyard where you can plant flowers and ride bikes as much as you want."
Olivia reached out and grabbed Emma’s hand, both of them squeezing tightly.
Daniel walked over to the edge of the bed, crouching down so he was eye-level with the twins. "You girls showed more courage than most adults do in a lifetime. You saved each other. And you saved a lot of other kids who didn't have anyone to speak up for them."
Emma looked up at Daniel, her eyes bright and clear, completely free of the fear that had haunted them on the sidewalk days ago.

"Thank you, Officer Daniel," Emma whispered, throwing her arms around his neck in a fierce, sudden hug.
Daniel wrapped his arms gently around her, feeling a profound sense of peace settle over the room. The storm outside had passed completely, leaving behind a clear, brilliant blue sky that stretched out endlessly toward the horizon.
