Chapter 4 - The Blackout Siege

The emergency red lights cast long, distorted shadows across the squad room walls as the precinct’s backup generator sputtered and whined. Downstairs, the heavy front doors banged open with a deafening crash, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots on the concrete stairs.
"They're inside," Sarah hissed, pulling her service weapon from its holster and sliding the slide back with a sharp metallic clack. "Reed, we've been compromised. That wasn't just a corporate remote wipe—that was a tactical deployment."
Daniel grabbed his Glock, checking the magazine in the dim red glow. "How did they find us this fast? This precinct is secure."
"Apex Bio-Tech doesn't just make pills, Daniel. They have private security contracts with government intelligence contractors," Sarah said, moving low toward the door. "When Michael triggered that dead-man's switch, it broadcasted our exact GPS coordinates to an armed response unit."
Heavy footsteps pounded down the second-floor corridor. Someone kicked against the squad room's reinforced wooden door with enough force to splinter the frame.
Bang!
The door shuddered, the deadbolt groaning under the strain.
"We need a secondary exit!" Daniel whispered, scanning the room.
"The old maintenance shaft behind the server racks," Sarah pointed toward the back corner. "It drops down into the municipal storm drains that lead straight to the hospital parking lot."
Another massive kick shattered the door lock, sending wood fragments flying across the room. Two men in black tactical gear, faces concealed behind reinforced ceramic masks and carrying suppressed carbines, stepped through the threshold. Their tactical flashlights cut through the red gloom, sweeping the room.
"Target identified!" one of them barked over a comms headset. "Secure the drive and eliminate any digital redundancy!"
Daniel didn't hesitate. He raised his weapon, squeezed off two warning shots into the acoustic ceiling tiles to pin them down, and yelled, "Go, Sarah! Move!"
They scrambled behind the heavy steel server racks just as a hail of suppressed gunfire chewed through the drywall where they had been standing a second earlier. Plaster dust and insulation rained down like snow.
Sarah reached the maintenance hatch first, twisting the heavy iron wheel and yanking the rusted door open. The smell of damp earth, rushing rainwater, and stagnant city water billowed up from the dark abyss below.

"Get in! Go!" Sarah urged, covering Daniel as he slid legs-first into the dark vertical shaft.
As Sarah dropped in behind him and pulled the heavy iron hatch shut, the muffled sound of boots reached the landing above. They were trapped between an army of corporate mercenaries hunting them in the dark and a raging underground river beneath the city streets.
