Chapter 1 - The First Knock

The heavy brass handle of the station door rattled violently, a metallic clatter that cut through the low hum of the box fan. Michael Carter’s voice filtered through the glass, muffled by the thick double-paned security window, but sharp enough to carry.
"Open up! I know my daughters are in there!"
Daniel didn't move from his spot behind the front counter. He cast a reassuring glance down at the twins. Emma had pulled Olivia closer, wrapping her small frame around her sister’s trembling shoulders like a shield. Olivia’s eyes were glassy, her breathing shallow and uneven, the sedative or whatever chemical Michael had forced down her throat clearly taking a heavier toll.
"Officer Reed! I demand you open this door immediately!" Michael shouted, slamming the flat of his palm against the glass. The sound echoed through the sterile room, rattling the stack of incident forms. "Those children are minors, and they are in my custody. You have no legal right to detain them!"
Daniel stepped away from the desk and walked deliberately toward the front entrance. He stopped just short of the door, keeping his hands empty and visible, and looked through the glass.
Michael stood under the flickering fluorescent light of the parking lot overhang. He was a tall man, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that seemed entirely out of place in a worn-down neighborhood precinct. But his posture was rigid, his face flushed with a furious, controlled rage that barely masked a deep panic. He wasn't just an angry father; he was a man whose carefully constructed world was beginning to unravel.
"Mr. Carter," Daniel said, his voice amplified only slightly by the thick glass. "This is a police precinct. If you wish to file a report or speak with an officer, you will wait for the paramedics to arrive and answer a few questions."
"Questions?" Michael sneered, his fingers curling into the collar of his coat. "My children ran away. They have medical conditions that require immediate supervision. You are harboring runaways. I will have your badge for this, Reed. Open the door before I call your captain right now!"
"Your captain is already aware, Mr. Carter," Daniel lied smoothly, buying time. In reality, the station phone lines had been glitching intermittently due to the storm, but dispatch knew the ambulance was two minutes away. "Step back from the glass."
Michael’s eyes narrowed. He looked past Daniel, trying to peer into the dark interior of the station, but the counter blocked his view of the girls. For a second, a flicker of calculation crossed Michael’s face—a sudden, desperate shift from righteous indignation to cold strategy. He reached into his coat pocket.
Before Michael could pull anything out, the wail of approaching sirens cut through the wet night air. Red and blue lights flashed against the brick walls of the alleyway, painting the station lobby in strobe-like urgency.
The sound of the ambulance caused Michael to freeze. He pulled his hand empty from his pocket, shot one venomous glare at the locked glass door, and backed away toward his SUV.
"This isn't over," Michael muttered, his lips moving behind the glass before he turned on his heel, climbed back into his vehicle, and threw it into reverse, spraying gravel across the pavement as he sped out of the lot into the rainy gloom.
Daniel watched the taillights fade before he turned back to the counter.

"He's gone for now," Daniel said softly, crouching down to meet Emma’s frightened gaze. "The ambulance is right outside. You're going to be safe."
The heavy front doors unlocked with a click as the paramedics rushed in, emergency bags in hand, bringing the smell of rain and sterile disinfectant into the room.
