Chapter 5 - The Underground River

The iron hatch slammed shut overhead, sealing Daniel and Sarah in pitch-black dampness. The only sound was the roar of rushing water echoing through the concrete storm drain below and their own ragged breathing.
"Watch your step," Daniel’s voice rasped in the dark as his boots hit the slick concrete floor of the utility tunnel. He switched on his tactical flashlight, the narrow beam cutting through thick clouds of mist and swirling debris. "The current from the storm is pushing hard. Stay close to the wall."
Sarah dropped down beside him, her pistol held at the ready, sweeping the dark expanse of the tunnel. "If those mercenaries try to follow us down here, they’ll bottleneck at the ladder hatch. But we can't stay in the open. Where does this lateral pipe lead?"
"Straight toward Saint Jude’s hospital auxiliary basement," Daniel said, consulting the mental map of the city’s underground infrastructure he had memorized during his academy days. "It’s about six blocks north. If we make it to the hospital sub-level, we can reach Olivia’s room before Michael realizes we bypassed his security net."
They began moving upstream against the knee-deep, freezing water. Every step required deliberate effort as the subterranean current tugged at their boots, threatening to sweep them off balance into the dark, swirling depths of the municipal runoff.
Suddenly, a sharp ping echoed from Sarah’s tactical vest.
She froze, pulling a secure encrypted communicator from her pocket. The screen flickered with a text alert routed through an independent satellite relay.
"It's Dr. Harrison," Sarah whispered, shielding the screen’s light with her hand. "He says Michael Carter just arrived at Saint Jude’s with a heavily armed private security detail under the guise of an 'emergency pediatric extraction order.' He’s trying to seize Olivia before surgery."
Daniel’s jaw tightened. "He knows the second device inside her is his only ticket out. If he gets his hands on her before Dr. Harrison extracts it, she'll disappear into one of Apex’s offshore black sites, and no one will ever see either of the twins again."
"How much time do we have?" Sarah asked, her boots splashing faster against the concrete.

"Not enough," Daniel said. "Pick up the pace."
They pushed through the freezing water, the dark tunnel walls closing in around them like the throat of a beast. Ahead, a faint yellow glow marked the drainage grate leading directly into the hospital’s secure sub-basement.
