Chapter 7 - The Final Indictment

Daniel’s face contorted into a mask of pure rage. For a split second, the polished, untouchable businessman vanished, replaced by the violent, abusive monster I had known behind closed doors. He lunged forward across the table, his hand clawing out toward my throat.

“You ungrateful little—”

He didn't even take two steps before the federal marshals swarmed him.

Two agents tackled Daniel hard against the polished mahogany table, pinning his arms behind his back with military precision. The heavy thud echoed through the silent boardroom as the board of directors scrambled backward in horror, gasping and shielding their eyes.

“Daniel Carter, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, and corporate racketeering,” Special Agent Marcus recited crisply, snapping cold steel handcuffs around Daniel’s wrists. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

Daniel thrashed against the agents, his face pressed flat against the polished wood, veins bulging in his neck as he screamed curses.

“You can't do this! Do you know who I am?! I am Carter International! This is my company! Evelyn, you bitch, you'll pay for this! You'll rot in prison!”

I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I watched him with absolute, tranquil detachment as the marshals hauled him upright and dragged him toward the double doors, his tailored suit jacket torn and his expensive leather shoes scuffing against the marble floor.

As they pushed him past the threshold into the hallway, Daniel threw one last venomous glare over his shoulder.

“You have nothing, Evelyn!” he snarled. “Without me, you are nothing!”

The heavy double doors closed shut, cutting off his frantic shouting.

Silence descended upon the boardroom once more, broken only by the distant hum of the building's ventilation system. The board members stood frozen, staring at me in stunned, horrified silence.

The CFO slowly raised his hands, clearing his throat nervously. “Mrs. Carter... regarding the restructuring of the trust... how would you like us to proceed?”

I looked down at the polished conference table, then up at Vanessa, who offered a small, tired, but triumphant smile.

“Begin liquidation of all remaining corporate assets,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and resonant. “And prepare the paperwork to transfer full operational control of the Carter Family Philanthropic Trust to an independent board of directors managed entirely by victims of financial abuse and domestic violence.”

The CFO nodded rapidly, scrambling to pick up his tablet. “Right away, Mrs. Carter.”
