Chapter 5 - The Net Closes

Special Agent Marcus led us into a secure, windowless interrogation room on the third floor of the federal building. The walls were painted a dull institutional gray, and a single metal table stood in the center, flanked by four chairs. The hum of the ventilation system was the only sound breaking the heavy silence.
For the next four hours, we laid out the entire apparatus of Daniel's criminal empire.
I sat across from Marcus and a forensic financial investigator named Chen, walking them through the corporate restructuring documents I had unknowingly signed over the past five years. I explained how Daniel had used the Carter Family Philanthropic Trust as a front to siphon millions in untaxed capital into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland.
Vanessa sat beside me, backing up every detail with cryptographic proofs, transaction timestamps, and internal server logs she had extracted from Daniel's private network. She didn't flinch or hesitate; she delivered the evidence with the clinical precision of a seasoned prosecutor.
“If these numbers check out,” Agent Marcus said, rubbing his temples as he stared at the mountain of printed bank statements spread across the metal table, “this isn't just tax fraud. This is rackhet-tier corporate malfeasance. We're looking at federal indictments, asset seizures, and mandatory prison time.”
“The automated transfer we discussed should be hitting the escrow account right now,” Vanessa noted, checking the digital clock on the wall. It was 1:15 PM.
Just as she spoke, Agent Marcus's desk phone buzzed loudly.
He picked it up, listening intently as the voice on the other end spoke at a rapid-fire pace. His eyes widened, and he looked up across the table directly at me.
“Agent Miller,” Marcus said into the receiver. “Talk to me.”
“Sir, we've got an automated alert from the Federal Reserve financial intelligence unit,” the voice crackled through the speakerphone. “A massive multi-million-dollar asset liquidation just cleared from Carter International’s primary corporate accounts. Seventy percent of their liquid reserves were instantly intercepted and rerouted to a secure, frozen escrow holding in Zurich.”
A slow, victorious smile spread across Vanessa's face.
“And the source IP?” Marcus demanded.
“It originated from an internal executive terminal inside Daniel Carter's corporate penthouse office,” Miller replied breathlessly. “And sir... the system logs indicate the authorization override was executed using Mrs. Evelyn Carter's master administrative credentials.”

Agent Marcus slowly lowered the phone, staring at me with a new level of profound respect.
“Well, Mrs. Carter,” Marcus said quietly. “It appears your husband just received your message.”
