Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

Six months later, the grand opening of the new sanctuary center in downtown Chicago was a resounding success.
The auditorium was filled to capacity with advocates, legal experts, journalists, and dozens of courageous women and men who had walked through fires similar to my own. Standing backstage in a tailored navy blue blazer, I felt a familiar flutter of nerves in my stomach, but it was accompanied by a deep, immovable anchor of strength.

She caught my eye and offered an encouraging, genuine smile—a far cry from the cold, calculating fugitive who had climbed through my bedroom window on that terrifying night six months ago.
“You ready?” Vanessa whispered gently.
I took a deep breath, smoothing the lapels of my jacket.
“More than ready,” I said.
The master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium out front, his voice booming warmly through the auditorium speakers.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming the founder and chairwoman of the Vance-Carter Foundation for Survivor Advocacy—Evelyn Vance.”
Applause erupted like rolling thunder, washing over the stage in a wave of warmth and solidarity.

I stepped out from behind the heavy velvet curtains, walking gracefully into the bright, welcoming lights of the stage. I looked out across the sea of faces—faces of hope, survival, and renewal.
I stood tall, my shoulders back, my head held high, and looked out toward the bright horizon of my future. I wasn't running anymore. I was finally home.
