Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Confrontation

By 3:30 PM, Special Agent Marcus and a tactical team of federal marshals had secured a federal search and seizure warrant for Carter International's corporate headquarters downtown. Vanessa and I rode in the back of an unmarked federal SUV, escorted by two armed agents, watching the gleaming glass towers of the financial district loom larger through the rain-streaked windows.

When we arrived at the sleek marble lobby of Carter International, the atmosphere was chaotic.

Corporate executives, administrative assistants, and nervous PR representatives were milling about in panicked clusters near the elevators. Federal agents in tactical vests were already securing the perimeter, seizing server banks, and sealing off the executive suites on the forty-second floor.

“Stay close to us,” Agent Marcus instructed as we stepped out of the elevator into the penthouse foyer.

The heavy mahogany double doors of the main boardroom stood wide open. Inside, standing at the head of the polished conference table, was Daniel.

He looked immaculate in his custom Brioni suit, but his face was deathly pale. His hair was slightly disheveled, and his hands gripped the edge of the mahogany table so tightly his knuckles were bruised and bloodless. Standing around the table were the remaining members of the board of directors, shouting over one another in a frantic panic.

“What do you mean the accounts are frozen?!” Daniel roared at the corporate CFO, who was cowering near the window. “Find the breach! Trace the protocol override right now!”

“Mr. Carter,” a sharp, calm voice cut through the shouting.

Daniel spun around, his eyes sweeping across the boardroom entrance.

And then he saw us.

His eyes widened in utter disbelief as he looked past Agent Marcus and the federal marshals. His gaze landed first on Vanessa, standing tall and unflinching, and then slowly shifted to me—standing upright, head held high, without a trace of fear left in my body.

“Evelyn?” Daniel whispered, his voice cracking slightly. He took a half-step forward, slipping back into his practiced, charming facade. “Evelyn, thank God! The police told me you were missing, that you were in danger! These... these people, they don't know what they're doing—some unhinged people broke into our home, they must have kidnapped you—come here, honey—”

“Don't you dare touch her, Daniel,” Vanessa snapped, stepping in front of me with icy fury.

Daniel stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting between Vanessa and me. A dark, venomous realization washed over his features as the pieces fell into place. The missing flash drive. The corporate override. The federal agents standing behind us.

“You,” Daniel hissed, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous growl as he stared at Vanessa. “You bitch. You set this up from the beginning.”

May you like

“Not just her, Daniel,” I stepped forward, walking past the federal agents and entering the boardroom under my own power. I stopped five feet away from him, looking him straight in the eyes with a calm, unshakeable strength he had spent twelve years trying to crush.

“You thought you could lock me away, frame me for your crimes, and walk away clean,” I said, my voice echoing clearly off the mahogany walls. “You thought I was your property. But you forgot one simple rule of business, Daniel: never underestimate someone you spent years teaching how to survive.”
