Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

A year to the day after the harrowing 911 call changed their lives forever, the sun rose over Cedar Street in a brilliant burst of gold and amber. The neighborhood had transformed entirely; rusted fences had been repaired, overgrown lawns were manicured, and an atmosphere of genuine neighborly care had taken root.
Inside the Hale home, the morning routine was bustling with cheerful chaos.
Ashley, now eight years old, stood in front of the hallway mirror struggling to tie her shoelaces while simultaneously trying to pack her school lunchbox. Her light-brown hair was neatly braided—an improvement from Andrew’s early attempts, though he still proudly claimed credit for teaching her how to do it.
Andrew walked out of the kitchen holding a steaming mug of coffee and a plate of scrambled eggs.
"Alright, birthday girl, eat up or you're going to miss the bus," Andrew teased, setting the plate down.
"It's not just my birthday, Daddy. It's our anniversary!" Ashley corrected him with a wide, gap-toothed grin.
Andrew paused, a soft, melancholic smile touching his lips as he knelt down beside her. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, beautifully wrapped box tied with a silver ribbon.
"I know," Andrew said softly. "A whole year since we showed the world what happens when family sticks together."
Ashley ripped open the paper to reveal a delicate silver charm bracelet, complete with a tiny engraved puppy charm and a miniature police badge. Her eyes welled with happy tears as she threw her arms around his neck.
"Thank you, Daddy. It's the best present ever."
A sharp honk from the driveway signaled the arrival of the school bus. As Ashley grabbed her backpack and bounded out the front door, she stopped on the porch and turned back, waving enthusiastically.

"Have a good day at work! I love you!" she shouted.
"Love you too, bug! Have a great day!" Andrew called back, watching her board the bus with a heart full of unadulterated peace.
