Chapter 5 - The Discovery at the Pump House

The abandoned pump house was a relic of the town’s industrial past—a crumbling concrete block structure with a rusted iron door that hung crookedly on its hinges. Inside, it smelled of stagnant water, damp concrete, and rusted iron.
Natalie pushed the door open, the metal groaning in protest.
"Andrew?" she called out, sweeping her flashlight beam across the dark, cavernous room.
Silence answered her, save for the steady drip of water leaking from the ceiling pipes.
She stepped further inside, her light cutting through the thick darkness. In the far corner, half-hidden behind a stack of rotting wooden pallets, a shadow stirred.
"Stay back," a weak, trembling voice rasped.
Natalie lowered her light slightly so it didn't blind him, her heart aching at the sight before her. Andrew Hale was huddled against the damp concrete wall, shivering violently. His blue work jacket was torn to shreds, his face caked in dried blood and mud, and his right leg twisted at an unnatural angle.
"Andrew, it's okay. I'm Officer Brooks. You're safe now," Natalie said softly, dropping to her knees beside him.
Andrew looked up, his eyes wide with feverish confusion. "Ashley... Is Ashley okay? Did she get her medicine?"
"She's at the hospital, Andrew. She's receiving treatment, and she's going to be just fine," Natalie reassured him, gently placing a warm emergency blanket over his shivering shoulders. "And Denise is in handcuffs. She won't hurt either of you ever again."
A massive shudder wracked Andrew's body, and for a moment, his eyes rolled back.
"Hey, stay with me, Andrew!" Natalie shouted into her shoulder mic. "Medic! I have him! We need an immediate extraction at the old pump house on Old Mill Road!"

Within minutes, frantic footsteps echoed outside as paramedics rushed in with a backboard and a trauma kit. They lifted Andrew carefully, placing him on a stretcher and securing his injured leg. As they wheeled him out into the fresh night air toward the waiting ambulance, Andrew caught Natalie’s sleeve with a trembling hand.
"Thank you..." he whispered, a single tear cutting a clean path through the dirt on his cheek. "Thank you for believing us."
