Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

Later that afternoon, a sleek police cruiser pulled up along the curb of Cedar Street. Officer Natalie Brooks stepped out, carrying a large, frosted birthday cake adorned with colorful sprinkles and eight bright candles.

She walked up the front steps just as Andrew was sweeping the porch.

"Delivery for the birthday princess," Natalie announced with a bright grin, holding up the cake.

Andrew laughed, stepping aside to let her in. "You really didn't have to do this, Natalie. You spoil her."

"That's kind of my job description now, isn't it? Honorary aunt duties," Natalie replied, setting the cake down on the newly renovated kitchen table.

As if on cue, the front door burst open and Ashley came flying inside, dropping her backpack on the floor and squealing at the sight of the cake.

"Natalie! You're here!"

"Wouldn't miss it for the world," Natalie said, crouching down to match Ashley's height. "Ready to make a wish?"

Ashley nodded eagerly. Andrew stepped up behind her, placing a warm, protective hand gently on her shoulder, while Natalie stood close beside them. The three of them gathered around the glowing candles, surrounded by the warmth of a home that had conquered the darkest of nights.

Ashley closed her eyes tightly, making her wish—not for toys or treats, but simply for more days just like this one.

She blew out the candles in a single, mighty breath, and the room erupted into cheers and laughter. Outside, the rain began to fall in a gentle, rhythmic patter against the windowpane—no longer a sound of fear or loneliness, but a soothing lullaby for a family made unbreakable by love.
