Chapter 6 - Healing Wounds

The morning sun broke through the dense clouds, washing Cedar Street in a warm, golden light that contrasted sharply with the gloomy atmosphere of the past few days. The handwritten sign that once read SHAME ON YOU had been torn down. In its place, colorful chalk drawings lined the sidewalk outside the Hale residence, left by neighbors who were now overwhelmed with guilt and eager to make amends.
Inside St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, room 412 was filled with the gentle hum of medical equipment and the sweet scent of fresh flowers.
Ashley sat propped up in her hospital bed, a tray of pancakes and fruit sitting untouched in front of her. Clutched tightly in her arms was Buddy the stuffed puppy, who now wore a tiny, makeshift bandage around his ear courtesy of a pediatric nurse.
The door clicked open, and Andrew walked in. He was leaning heavily on a crutch, his right leg encased in a sturdy cast, but his face was clean-shaven and his eyes shone with a warmth that had been missing for years.
"Daddy!" Ashley cried out, her face lighting up as she tossed her blanket aside.
"Careful, sweetheart," Andrew laughed softly, lowering himself into the chair beside her bed and gathering her into a tight, careful hug. He buried his face in her light-brown hair, his shoulders shaking with quiet emotion. "I'm so sorry I was gone, bug. I'm so sorry."
"You promised you'd come back," Ashley whispered against his shoulder, her arms wrapping fiercely around his neck. "And you did."
"Always," Andrew murmured, kissing the top of her head.
Officer Natalie Brooks stood quietly in the doorway, leaning against the frame with a soft smile playing on her lips. She held a large, colorful box wrapped in shiny paper.
Ashley spotted her first and smiled shyly. "Hi, Natalie."
Natalie stepped into the room, holding out the box. "Hi, Ashley. I brought you a visitor—well, besides your dad."
Ashley carefully untied the ribbon and pulled back the lid. Inside sat a brand-new, fluffy golden-brown puppy plush toy wearing a miniature police officer’s hat.

"Meet Officer Buddy's new partner," Natalie grinned.
Ashley gasped, her eyes wide with delight. "He's perfect!"
