Chapter 9 - Building the Future

I didn't hesitate.

“I thought you’d never ask,” I smiled, sliding my arms up around his neck.

Lucas’s expression melted into a rare, breathtaking smile that reached all the way to his dark eyes. He pulled me flush against him and kissed me—not with the desperate, demanding urgency of a man used to taking what he wanted, but with a deep, tender reverence that spoke volumes of everything we had survived together.

The months that followed were a testament to healing and new beginnings.

The penthouse transformed from a cold, imposing fortress into a vibrant home. Lorraine visited often, laughing over glasses of wine on the balcony and teasing us about our unorthodox beginning.

“I always knew my cousin needed someone with a backbone,” Lorraine declared one evening, raising her glass toward us. “I just didn't expect it to be a quiet art researcher who takes down a corporate syndicate.”

“She didn't take down the syndicate,” Lucas corrected smoothly, wrapping an arm around my waist as I laughed. “She just showed me where the door was.”

As the seasons changed, painting Riverton in autumn gold and winter snow, my life expanded in ways I never could have imagined during my darkest days with Derek. The Langford Gallery appointed me as the head director of acquisitions, putting me back in my element, surrounded by history, beauty, and art that survived the test of time.

And Lucas... Lucas remained my constant anchor. Beneath the formidable reputation of the Moretti name was a man of fierce loyalty, quiet humor, and a capacity for love that healed every fractured piece of my past. We built a life rooted not in control or fear, but in mutual respect, laughter, and an unbreakable bond forged in the fires of adversity.
