Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Web

The black Mercedes ate up the miles, speeding away from the Vance estate and plunging back into the glittering neon maze of Riverton. I sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window at the blurred lights, the heavy leather ledger resting securely in my lap.
The adrenaline that had sustained me through the break-in was rapidly fading, leaving behind a hollow, aching exhaustion. My ribs throbbed with every breath, and my hands still shook faintly.
Without taking his eyes off the road, Lucas reached across the console and placed his large, warm hand over mine, stilling the tremor in my fingers.
“You were extraordinary back there,” Lucas said quietly.
“I was terrified,” I whispered, looking down at our joined hands.
“Courage isn't the absence of fear, Lily,” he replied, his voice firm and grounding. “It’s moving forward even when you're shaking.”
We returned to the penthouse, but the atmosphere inside no longer felt like a temporary hiding place. It felt like a sanctuary. Lucas poured me a cup of hot tea laced with honey, gently insisting I drink it before letting him inspect the bruises on my ribs. He moved with a tender precision that completely contradicted his reputation as an underworld boss, applying cold compresses and antiseptic with hands that had just dismantled a criminal syndicate's primary asset.
Once I was settled comfortably on the couch with a soft cashmere blanket draped over my shoulders, Lucas opened the recovered ledger on the glass coffee table.
“Let’s see what Vance was hiding so desperately,” he murmured, flipping through the yellowed, handwritten pages.
For the next hour, we poured over the documents. The ledger detailed a massive corporate conspiracy: forged signatures, illegal shell companies, and systematic asset stripping orchestrated by the syndicate that had ruined Moretti Holdings. At the center of it all, acting as the legal architect and paper-pusher who cleaned the stolen money, was Derek Vance.
“He thought if he hid these records in his private safe, he had eternal insurance against the syndicate,” Lucas explained, pointing to a signed contract at the back of the ledger. “And he used them to blackmail the higher-ups for millions. But he didn't realize that keeping them was his ultimate death sentence. The moment the syndicate realized he had original copies, they would have eliminated him anyway.”
“And what happens now?” I asked, looking up at Lucas. “With these papers... does your family get justice?”
“More than justice,” Lucas said, a grim, satisfied smile touching his lips. “These documents implicate not just Derek, but every major political and corporate figure involved in my father’s ruin. By morning, copies of this ledger will be in the hands of federal investigators, rival syndicates, and the press. Vance’s empire is finished. He’ll spend the rest of his life behind bars—surrounded by the very men he helped put there.”
A heavy weight lifted off my chest, a physical sensation so profound I felt tears prick the corners of my eyes. The man who had terrorized me, controlled me, and beaten me was finally powerless.

“It’s really over?” I asked, my voice trembling.
“It’s over,” Lucas confirmed softly. He closed the ledger, leaned forward, and looked deep into my eyes. “You’re free, Lily. No more hiding. No more fear.”
