Chapter 10 - The Happy Ending

Two years to the day after I stumbled into the penthouse with a split lip and a terrified heart, I found myself standing in front of the same floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over Riverton.

Only this time, I wasn't wearing a borrowed silk nightgown.

I wore a simple, elegant ivory dress, the afternoon sun catching the delicate diamond pendant resting against my collarbone. Behind me, the penthouse was filled with the soft hum of string music and the laughter of close friends like Lorraine and trusted colleagues who had stood by us through the storm.

Footsteps approached behind me, familiar and steady. Strong arms wrapped around my waist, and a warm kiss pressed gently against the crook of my neck.

“Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Moretti?” Lucas whispered, his voice deep and warm.

I smiled, leaning back into his embrace, my hands resting over his arms.

“I was just thinking about three in the morning,” I murmured. “About a bruised stranger sleeping on a leather couch.”

Lucas chuckled, a rich, resonant sound that still sent a delicious shiver down my spine. He turned me gently in his arms so I was facing him. His dark eyes shone with a profound, unwavering devotion.

“Best bad decision I ever made,” he said softly.

“It wasn't a bad decision,” I corrected, sliding my arms around his neck as he slipped a gold band next to my engagement ring. “It was the beginning of everything.”

He smiled, pulling me close, and kissed me deeply, sealing a happily ever after neither of us ever thought possible. Outside, the city of Riverton stretched out endlessly beneath the golden sun, bright, beautiful, and entirely ours.
