Chapter 4 - The Hidden Vault

The silence in the kitchen stretched so long that the hum of the refrigerator sounded like a roaring engine. I stared down at the documents, the pieces of a horrifying puzzle snapping into place with brutal clarity.
“The study,” I whispered, the memory rushing back with vivid clarity. “The night before I left... I went looking for medicine. The wall safe behind his desk was open. Just a crack.”
Lucas didn't move a muscle, but every line of his body went taut. “What did you see?”
“An envelope,” I said, swallowing hard as the cold realization settled in my bones. “It had the exact same crest as your family’s holding company. Red wax seal, embossed with the double-M monogram. Derek slammed the door and locked it the second he heard me approach. He accused me of spying on him for hours afterward. That was... that was why he exploded last night over a dropped coffee mug. He wasn't just angry. He was terrified that I had seen inside that safe.”
Lucas released a slow, measured breath, though the fire in his eyes only burned hotter.
“It’s not just a corporate document, Lily,” Lucas said quietly. “That safe holds the original ledgers proving how my father’s signature was forged to sign away our entire shipping empire. Vance didn't just help steal my family's legacy; he kept the smoking gun to protect the people who ordered the hit.”
“And he thinks I took it,” I realized, a cold shiver running down my spine. “When I ran out of the house, I grabbed his leather jacket from the hallway coat rack because it was freezing outside. I left it in Lorraine's car, but... what if he thinks the papers are inside the pockets?”
“It doesn't matter what he thinks,” Lucas said, standing up with sudden, decisive movement. “What matters is that he knows you were in that room. Which means Vance won’t stop hunting you. Not just to satisfy his sick need for control, but because he knows that if you talk, he goes to prison—or worse.”
“Worse?” I echoed.
“Men like Derek answer to higher powers,” Lucas said darkly. “The syndicate that used him to tear my family apart? They don't leave loose ends. If Vance can’t find you and silence you himself, his handlers will do it for him.”
The weight of his words crushed down on me. For two years, I had thought my biggest problem was a husband with a vicious temper and a God complex. Now, I learned I had stumbled into the crosshairs of a ruthless criminal conspiracy spanning corporate boardrooms and the underworld.
“So what do we do?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. “Just wait here until they find us?”
A slow, dangerous smile touched the corners of Lucas’s mouth—a look of pure, calculated confidence.
“We don’t wait,” Lucas said, reaching for his suit jacket draped over the back of the chair. “We go on the offensive. Vance wants to play a game of shadows? We’re going to drag his secrets out into the glaring sun.”
“Go back?” I stood up, panic flashing in my eyes. “Lucas, are you insane? If we go back to that house—or even near it—we’re walking into a trap!”
“We aren't going blindly,” Lucas replied, stepping closer until I could smell the subtle, clean scent of sandalwood and expensive cologne. He reached out, his warm hand gently cupping my cheek, his thumb softly brushing against the fading bruise on my jaw. The contrast between his ruthless words and his impossibly tender touch made my breath hitch. “We go with a plan. And more importantly, you aren't going anywhere. I am going to get what belongs to my family. You are staying right here, locked behind sixty floors of reinforced steel and armed guards.”
“No,” I said, pulling back slightly, though I couldn't entirely tear my gaze away from his intense dark eyes. “I am not sitting here like a helpless damsel while you walk into danger because of my past. I know the security codes to that house. I know where Derek keeps the spare keys to his office files, and I know his schedule better than anyone. You need me.”
Lucas stared at me for a long, agonizing moment, searching my face for any sign of hesitation. What he found must have satisfied him, because a low, approving rumble sounded in his chest.
“Stubborn,” he murmured, a faint trace of amusement in his tone. “Lorraine really didn't do you justice.”
“Are you taking me with you or not?” I crossed my arms, wincing slightly as my ribs protested, but holding my ground.
Lucas sighed, a sound that conceded defeat to my stubbornness. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a sleek, heavy black firearm, and checked the magazine with a practiced, fluid motion before sliding it into a hidden holster under his arm.

“If you come with you,” Lucas said, his voice dropping into a deadly serious register, “you stay glued to my side every single second. You don't speak, you don't move, and you let me handle the violence. Do I make myself clear?”
“Crystal,” I said.
