Chapter 7 - Awakening and Accountability

Inside Ethan’s room, the morning sun was finally breaking through the heavy clouds, casting a warm golden glow across the white sheets.
Ethan was awake, propped up slightly against two pillows, staring blankly out the window at a flock of birds passing by. When he heard the door click open, his small head turned slowly.
When he saw Elena walking toward him, his big, soulful eyes filled with sudden tears.
"Elena..." he whispered, his voice cracking.
Elena didn't say anything. She hurried to the side of the bed, gently climbed onto the edge of the mattress, and pulled the boy into her arms, being careful not to jar his fractured arm. She held him tightly, burying her face in his soft hair as her own tears flowed freely.
"I'm here, sweetheart," Elena whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "I'm right here. You're safe now. Everything is going to be okay."
"Did you... did you get the recorder back?" Ethan asked against her shoulder, his small hands clutching the fabric of her jacket.
"I got it," Elena pulled back slightly, wiping a tear from his pale cheek with her thumb. "And everybody knows the truth now, Ethan. You were right. You didn't do anything wrong."
A soft knock sounded at the door.
Elena turned her head. Richard stood in the doorway, his hands trembling as he held onto the doorframe for support. He looked older, broken, and completely hollowed out by the realization of what his blindness had almost cost him. He slowly stepped into the room, stopping a few feet away from the bed as if he feared he didn't have the right to come any closer.
Ethan shrank back slightly against Elena, a flicker of residual fear crossing his young face at the sight of his father.
Richard saw that reaction, and it hit him harder than any physical blow could have. A loud, ragged sob broke from his chest. The powerful billionaire dropped to his knees right there on the hospital floor, covering his face with his hands as heavy, uncontrollable tears shook his entire frame.
"I'm so sorry, buddy," Richard wept, his voice cracking with unbearable anguish. "I'm so, so sorry. I wasn't there for you. I let her... I let her hurt you, and I blamed the wrong person. Please... can you ever forgive your dad?"
Ethan stared at his father for a long, quiet moment. He looked at Richard’s bowed head, seeing the genuine remorse and heartbreak in the man who was usually his invincible hero. Slowly, the boy’s guarded expression softened.
"Do you promise not to let her back in the house?" Ethan whispered softly.
Richard looked up, his eyes bloodshot and fierce with absolute determination. "Never again. She will never come near this family again. I swear to you on my life."
Ethan nodded slowly, extending his good arm out toward his father. "Okay, Dad. Come here."

Richard scrambled forward on his knees, burying his face in the blankets beside his son, wrapping his arms gently around Ethan’s legs as they both cried together. Elena sat beside them, resting one hand gently on Richard’s shoulder, completing the circle of healing.
Outside in the hallway, the low murmur of police radios signaled the arrival of authorities. Victoria’s reign of deceit had finally come to an end.
