Chapter 6 - The Voice of Truth

The hospital corridor seemed to shrink as the tiny speaker on Elena’s phone came to life.

At first, there was only the faint rustling of fabric and the background sound of footsteps on the mansion's marble foyer. Then, a sharp, angry voice cut through the air—unmistakable, cold, and venomous.

“Give me that recorder right now, you little brat! I told you to stop snooping into things that don't concern you!”

Victoria’s face turned the color of ash. Her carefully constructed composure shattered completely, her lips parting in a silent scream of horror as she listened to her own voice echoing down the hospital hallway.

The recording continued. Ethan’s small, trembling voice whimpered in response: “No! Stop it! I'm going to tell Daddy!”

“Your father doesn't care about your little toys, and he certainly doesn't need to hear your lies!” Victoria’s recorded voice snapped back, followed by a sudden scuffling sound, a sharp gasp, a terrifying thud of a small body hitting hard marble, and then a chilling, heartless whisper: “Stupid kid... should have stayed in your room.”

Click. The audio file ended.

Silence descended upon the fourth-floor corridor—a heavy, suffocating silence that felt heavier than lead.

Richard stood frozen in place. The phone in Elena’s hand was still glowing faintly, but he wasn't looking at the screen. His eyes were locked on Victoria, staring at her as if she were a total stranger—a monster wearing a human face. All the excuses, all the soft rationalizations she had fed him over the past twenty-four hours—that Elena was careless, that children fall, that boundaries needed to be set—collapsed into dust around him.

"Victoria..." Richard’s voice was barely a breath, choked with a mixture of raw grief, blinding rage, and overwhelming guilt. "Is that... was that you?"

Victoria took a half-step backward, her hands trembling violently. The elegant, untouchable fiancée was gone; in her place stood a cornered predator. "Richard, wait—listen to me! That file—that audio can be manipulated! In this day and age, anyone can use AI to fake a voice! She hacked it! She set me up!"

"AI?" Richard repeated, his voice rising, the terrifying fury of a billionaire whose only child had been nearly murdered finally breaking through his shock. He stepped toward her, his towering frame casting a dark shadow over her. "You pushed my son down the stairs. You pushed a six-year-old child and let me blame an innocent woman who has loved him like her own mother!"

"Victoria, please!" Victoria stammered, backing up against the wall as hospital staff and a passing doctor turned to stare in shock. "Don't be a fool! We're getting married next month! Think of our merger, think of our reputation—"

"To hell with the merger! To hell with the reputation!" Richard roared, his voice echoing off the tile walls with such intensity that a nurse dropped her clipboard at the nurses' station.

Before Victoria could bolt toward the elevators, heavy footsteps echoed from behind her. Two uniform security officers—not the mansion guards, but hospital security drawn by the shouting—stepped into the hallway, blocking the exit.

"Ma'am, I need you to stay right where you are," one of the security officers said, placing a hand on his radio.

Richard didn't look at Victoria again. He turned slowly toward Elena, his eyes swimming with tears he didn't try to hide. He dropped his gaze to the floor, unable to meet her eyes.

"Elena..." Richard choked out, his knees visibly trembling. He reached out a hand, then let it drop helplessly to his side. "I... God help me, Elena. I accused you. I doubted you. I almost let her drive you away."

Elena looked at him, her expression a mix of sorrow and quiet dignity. "An apology isn't for me, Richard. It's for Ethan."

Without waiting for another word, Elena turned her back on Richard and Victoria, pushing open the heavy door to Ethan’s hospital room.
