Chapter 5 - The Return to the Hospital

The digital clock on the dashboard of the rented sedan glowed 5:45 AM.

Elena sat in the parking lot of the private hospital, staring through the windshield at the grey, rain-streaked sky. Her face was pale, the scratch on her cheek slightly swollen, and her eyes were bloodshot from a night without sleep. But inside her pocket, the red plastic recorder felt as heavy as a block of gold.

She had spent the early hours at a small, all-night computer repair shop where a sympathetic young technician named Leo had managed to extract the raw audio file from the recorder's internal flash memory, cleaning up the static and transferring it directly to a secure USB drive and her phone.

“This is clean studio-grade audio now,” Leo had told her before handing her the phone. “If this was used in a legal proceeding, nobody could claim it’s ambiguous.”

Now, Elena faced the hardest part: confronting Richard.

She walked through the automatic sliding doors of the hospital lobby, her steps resolute. She didn't stop at the front desk; she headed straight for the private pediatric wing on the fourth floor.

As she stepped out of the elevator, she saw Richard standing outside Ethan's room. He was talking in low, tense tones with Victoria, who looked impeccably dressed in a beige trench coat, sipping an espresso as if she were waiting for a flight rather than recovering from a midnight intruder incident.

When Richard saw Elena walking down the corridor, his face darkened instantly. He stepped forward, blocking her path.

"Elena? What the hell are you doing here?" Richard demanded, his voice echoing slightly in the quiet hallway. "I told you to stay away."

Victoria stepped up beside him, her expression a masterclass of fabricated concern. "Oh, Richard, look at her face. She looks... unstable. After what happened at the mansion last night—breaking in, assaulting the security staff—maybe we should call the police right now."

Richard turned to Victoria, surprised. "Breaking in? What are you talking about?"

"She broke into the house past midnight, Richard," Victoria said smoothly, her eyes gleaming with triumphant malice. "She sneaked into Ethan's room and tried to steal his personal belongings. My security team caught her, but she managed to escape through the woods like a criminal."

Richard slowly turned back to Elena, disbelief and profound disappointment warring in his eyes. "Elena... is this true? Why would you do that?"

Elena didn't flinch. She looked straight into Richard’s eyes, her voice calm, carrying a quiet authority that made both Richard and Victoria pause.

"I broke into the house last night, Richard, because Victoria had something that belonged to me—or rather, something that belonged to Ethan," Elena said clearly.

Victoria let out a dry, scornful laugh. "See? She admits it! She's admitting to burglary!"

"I am talking about this," Elena said. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the red plastic toy recorder, and held it out on the flat of her palm.

Victoria’s coffee cup stopped halfway to her mouth. Her eyes widened for a fraction of a second—a microscopic crack in her armor. "That... that old toy was thrown out."

"No, Victoria, you tried to hide it," Elena said coldly. "Because you knew what was stored inside its memory chip."

Richard looked between the two women, his brow furrowed in deep confusion. "What is that? What are you talking about?"

"It’s Ethan’s recorder, Richard," Elena said, stepping closer to him. "The one he was holding right before he fell down the stairs. He told me he was recording when you two—when things got heated. Last night, I recovered the audio file. It wasn't an accident, Richard. Victoria didn't just 'supervise' him. She pushed him."

The hallway went dead silent. You could hear the faint hum of the hospital air conditioning overhead.

Richard stared at the red plastic toy as if it were a venomous snake. His face drained of all color. "That's... that's insane," he whispered, though the conviction in his voice was already crumbling. He turned to Victoria. "Victoria, tell her she's lying."

Victoria lowered her coffee cup, her expression shifting instantly from panic to icy, theatrical indignation. "Richard! You cannot seriously be listening to this deranged woman! She breaks into your home in the middle of the night, fabricates some wild conspiracy theory about a toy, and you're actually entertaining it? Look at her! She’s unhinged because you sidelined her!"

Richard looked at Victoria, then back at Elena, whose eyes remained steady, filled with absolute truth.

"Play it," Richard said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper.

"What?" Victoria gasped.

May you like

"Play the recording, Elena," Richard repeated, looking directly at the maid.

Before Victoria could lunge forward to knock it out of Elena’s hand, Elena tapped the screen of her phone, where Leo had loaded the cleaned audio file, and hit play.
