Chapter 2 - The Question in the Air

"Hear what, sweetheart?" Elena repeated gently, leaning closer as the steady beep of the heart monitor seemed to slow down, matching the heavy tension in the room.

Ethan blinked, his fever-bright eyes wide and lucid despite the concussion. His small fingers, free of the cast on his right arm, weakly tapped the red plastic casing of the toy recorder. "The voices. Before I fell. I pressed record because... because they were arguing."

Elena felt a cold draft sweep through the hospital room, even though the windows were tightly shut. "Arguing? Who was arguing, Ethan?"

Before the boy could answer, the door clicked open. Victoria glided into the room with a practiced, elegant grace, balancing a paper cup of coffee in one hand and a sympathetic smile on her face.

"How is our little fighter doing?" Victoria asked softly, stepping up to the bedside. Her eyes flicked instantly from Ethan to Elena, scanning them both with calculated sharpness.

Ethan instantly clamped his mouth shut. He pulled his hand away from the recorder, retreating slightly beneath the crisp white blankets. The small child's body stiffened—a physical reaction Elena had learned to recognize over the years of working at the mansion. It was the defense mechanism of a child who had learned to fear certain adult reactions.

Elena stood up slowly, her voice carefully controlled. "He was just telling me about his toy, Victoria."

Victoria tilted her head, a smile touching her lips that never quite reached her eyes. "Oh, that old thing? It’s just a noisy distraction. The doctors said he needs absolute quiet, Elena. Too much stimulation can cause brain fatigue. Maybe you should step out and grab some fresh air. You look exhausted."

The underlying command was unmistakable. It was an eviction notice wrapped in hospitality.

"I'm fine," Elena said, her chin lifting slightly. "I want to stay with him."

"Elena," Richard’s deep voice echoed from the doorway as he stepped inside, holding a stack of discharge-preparatory paperwork. His expression was a mix of exhaustion, lingering panic, and a newly seeded cloud of doubt. "Victoria is right. Let him rest. And... let’s talk in the corridor for a moment."

Elena’s heart sank. She looked at Ethan, who gave her a tiny, helpless nod as if giving her permission to leave so she wouldn't get in trouble. "I'll be right outside, sweetheart," she whispered.

Out in the hallway, away from the hum of the monitors, Richard leaned against the pale green wall and rubbed the bridge of his nose. The wealthy billionaire, usually so commanding and sharp in the boardroom, looked completely broken down by the events of the last twenty-four hours.

"Elena," Richard began, his voice raspy. "The police spoke to me again. They called it an unfortunate lapse in supervision."

"Richard, you know me," Elena pleaded, stepping closer. "I would never, ever put Ethan in danger. I was gone for forty seconds to grab the basket. He said he wanted to show me something on his recorder—"

"That recorder," Richard interrupted, his voice hardening slightly. "Victoria mentioned it. She thinks it's becoming an obsession for him. And frankly... she thinks your constant presence might be blurring lines. You're the maid, Elena. Sometimes... boundaries get crossed."

Elena felt as though she had been slapped. The words stung worse than any physical blow. "Boundaries? After five years of raising your son while you were busy expanding your empire, you're talking to me about boundaries?"

"Don't do that," Richard snapped, his temper flaring defensively. "Don't turn this into an attack on my parenting. Right now, my son is lying in there with a fractured arm. The detectives are looking for accountability. Victoria is trying to keep this household from falling apart, and you're acting defensive."

"Because I'm innocent!" Elena cried out, drawing a sharp look from a passing nurse. She lowered her voice, her eyes burning with unshed tears. "Ask yourself, Richard. Why was Ethan so terrified when Victoria walked into that room just now? Why did he stop talking about the argument?"

Richard stared at her, a flicker of internal conflict crossing his features. But the memory of Victoria's calm, steady voice all night—whispering sweet logic into his ear, reminding him of how "over-invested" Elena had become—acted like a heavy anchor dragging him down.

"Take the rest of the week off, Elena," Richard said coldly, avoiding his gaze. "Go home. I’ll keep you on full pay, but I don't want you near the mansion or the hospital until Ethan is back home and things have settled down."

Elena stared at him, realizing that the man she had respected and trusted had already chosen his side. Without another word, she turned and walked away down the sterile hallway, leaving Richard standing alone with his growing doubts.
