Chapter 6 - The Hearing

Judge Thomas, a sharp-eyed woman with silver hair pulled back into a severe bun, entered the courtroom. Everyone rose, then settled back into their seats with a rustle of clothing.

"Case number 2026-CV-4891, In re Elizabeth Vance," Judge Thomas announced, adjusting her glasses. "We are here for an emergency review of guardianship and petition for temporary placement transfer. Mr. Marcus Morales representing Child Protective Services, and Attorney Lawrence representing the respondents, Gloria and Walt Vance."

Marcus stood up first, presenting the evidence with calm, devastating precision. He detailed the police search, the photographs of the locked closet, the bucket, the financial records proving the embezzlement of Lizzy's trust fund, and the medical report from Dr. Henderson outlining malnutrition and psychological trauma.

When Marcus finished, Attorney Lawrence stood up, looking visibly uncomfortable. "Your Honor, my clients maintain that these allegations are exaggerated by a disgruntled family member. While certain disciplinary measures may have been unconventional, they were implemented under the stress of managing a child with severe behavioral difficulties..."

"Counsel," Judge Thomas interrupted, her voice cutting through the courtroom like a razor blade. "Do not insult my intelligence or waste my court's time. You are describing industrial-grade hardware screwed into a residential closet door to confine a six-year-old child while her guardians embezzled her trust fund. That is not unconventional discipline. That is a felony."

Gloria tried to stand up, opening her mouth to speak, but Judge Thomas pointed a finger directly at her. "Sit down, Mrs. Vance, or I will have you removed for contempt of court before I strip your rights."

Gloria froze, her face turning a mottled red, and slowly sank back into her chair.

"Based on the overwhelming evidence presented by CPS, law enforcement, and the attending medical staff," Judge Thomas continued, raising her wooden gavel, "I hereby order the immediate revocation of Gloria and Walt Vance's guardianship over Elizabeth Vance. Furthermore, temporary emergency custody is granted jointly to her aunt, Natalie Hayes, and her uncle, Adam Hayes, effective immediately."

Thunk.

The gavel struck the sound block, ringing out through the quiet room.

"Bailiff," Judge Thomas added calmly. "Please escort Mr. and Mrs. Vance to the holding area downstairs. The District Attorney's office has filed formal criminal charges for felony child abuse, unlawful confinement, and grand larceny. Their arraignment will begin at 4:00 PM."

As the bailiff stepped behind my parents, Gloria lunged forward, gripping the edge of the table. "You will never get away with this, Natalie! Ian will hate you! You've ruined our family!"

Walt didn't say a word as he was led away, his head bowed low. The heavy oak doors swung shut behind them, sealing their fate.
