Chapter 5 - The Legal Battle Lines

By 8:00 AM, the rain had cleared, leaving behind a sharp, brilliant morning sun that cut across the hospital parking lot. Adam went home briefly to get clothes for me and Noah, while I stayed by Lizzy's bedside as she slept fitfully, her little hand still wrapped around my index finger.

At 9:30 AM, Sergeant Miller returned to the hospital room accompanied by a CPS caseworker named Marcus Vance—no relation to my parents, thankfully—who carried a thick manila folder.

"We executed the search warrant at your parents' house an hour ago," Miller told me quietly out in the hallway so Lizzy wouldn't wake up. "It was worse than the photos showed. Upstairs, that closet had a latch with scrape marks indicating it had been used for months, maybe years. Inside, there was a bucket for a toilet, a stained mattress pad, and a single half-empty water bottle. Downstairs, in their desk, we found financial documents showing they were draining the trust fund set up by Ian's late employer for Lizzy's future care."

"They were stealing from her?" I whispered, my stomach turning.

"Every dime," Marcus Morales added, adjusting his glasses. "They applied for state care subsidies for special-needs guardianship while simultaneously pocketing the trust fund disbursements. It was a well-oiled grift. Your parents presented themselves as pillars of virtue while systematically abusing and exploiting a vulnerable child for financial gain."

"What happens next?" I asked.

"An emergency shelter hearing is scheduled for 2:00 PM today at the county family courthouse," Marcus said. "The district attorney is already reviewing charges against Gloria and Walt: felony child abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and financial fraud. With the evidence we have, the judge will strip their guardianship immediately. The question is permanent placement."

"She stays with us," I said without a single second of hesitation. "Adam and I have already talked about it. Noah loves her like a sister. Our home is open and safe."

"Given your relation and clean background check, you're the priority candidate," Marcus smiled warmly. "I'll be recommending full emergency custody to you and your husband during this afternoon's hearing."

At 1:30 PM, Adam met me at the courthouse downtown. The marble hallways echoed with the hurried footsteps of lawyers and families navigating the system. When we entered Judge Thomas's courtroom, my parents were already seated at the defense table.

They didn't look like pillars of the community anymore. Gloria's hair was slightly disheveled, her expensive blouse wrinkled, and her expression a mask of venomous fury. Walt sat beside her, staring blankly at the polished wood table. Their court-appointed defense attorney was frantically flipping through papers, looking thoroughly miserable.

When Gloria saw me walk in with Adam, her eyes locked onto mine with a look that promised total war.
