Chapter 10 - The Safe Harbor

The evening sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow across the backyard as the last of the birthday guests departed, leaving behind a scattering of wrapping paper, leftover cupcakes, and the lingering echoes of happy laughter.

Lizzy sat on the back porch steps, wearing her favorite blue sweater and holding the crown Noah had made for her out of construction paper and glitter. She looked up at the evening sky, where the first stars were beginning to twinkle through the fading twilight.

I walked out carrying two mugs of hot cocoa with miniature marshmallows floating on top, handing one to her and sitting down on the step beside her.

"Having a good birthday, sweetie?" I asked, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.

Lizzy leaned her head against my arm, taking a careful sip of her cocoa. "It's the best birthday ever, Aunt Natalie. Can we stay outside as long as we want?"

May you like

"As long as you want," I smiled, looking out across the quiet, peaceful yard where the grass swayed gently in the evening breeze. There were no locks here. No heavy metal hasps, no dark closets, and no fear. Just warmth, safety, and a future stretching out wide and bright before her.

Ian walked out onto the porch, handing me a blanket to drape over Lizzy's legs, and sat down on her other side, taking her small hand in his. Together, the three of us watched the stars come out, knowing that the shadows of the past were finally behind us forever, replaced by the enduring light of love, truth, and a truly happy ending.
