Chapter 4 - The Investigation Widens

Sergeant Miller stood up slowly, his expression hard as granite. He looked at the two uniformed officers standing behind him. "Officer Davis, Officer Cole, please escort Mr. and Mrs. Vance outside to the cruiser. Do not cuff them yet, but keep them separated and detain them while I contact Child Protective Services and secure a search warrant for the residence."

"You can't do this!" Gloria shrieked, her mask of polite control shattering entirely as panic set in. "We are respectable people! We go to Grace Fellowship Church! We are pillars of this community! You can't listen to this hysterical woman and a disturbed child!"

"Ma'am, keep your voice down," Officer Davis said firmly, taking her by the elbow. Walt tried to stand his ground, puffing out his chest, but Officer Cole stepped into his path, guiding him toward the automatic sliding doors with quiet authority.

As they were led out into the rain, Gloria turned back, her eyes blazing with pure hatred fixed directly on me. "You will pay for this, Natalie. You and your little family. We will take Noah too. We will destroy everything you love."

The doors slid shut, cutting off her voice.

Nurse Gable let out a long breath and looked at me. "Well handled, Natalie. Dr. Henderson is finishing up Lizzy's formal physical exam in examination room four. Let's get her back there so we can document everything properly for the detective bureau."

We spent the next three hours in the bright, sterile exam room. A pediatric social worker named Elena Morales joined us, sitting on a stool and offering Lizzy a coloring book and crayons while she asked gentle, low-pressure questions. Lizzy finally began to color, choosing a bright blue crayon to draw an ocean—something she told us she had only ever seen once in a picture book because she wasn't allowed outside much.

Dr. Henderson, a kind pediatrician with graying temples, came in with a clipboard. He looked at me and Adam with a grave expression.

"Physically, she is severely malnourished, dehydrated, and suffering from acute sleep deprivation," Dr. Henderson stated. "There are fading contusions on her upper arms and back that are consistent with being grabbed forcefully and restrained. Mentally, she is exhibiting classic signs of prolonged isolation trauma. We are admitting her for at least forty-eight hours for observation, intravenous rehydration, and psychological stabilization."

"Can we stay with her?" Adam asked immediately.

"You're listed as her emergency contacts through Ian's prior medical power of attorney documentation, but given the guardianship status held by your parents, CPS will need to issue an emergency temporary custody placement order before you can officially take her home," Morales explained gently. "However, given the evidence Sergeant Miller just relayed from the scene and your photographic proof, I am filing an emergency petition for guardianship transfer first thing in the morning. I don't foresee a judge keeping her with your parents for another hour, let alone days."

"What about Ian?" I asked, my heart aching for my brother. "He's in a residential treatment facility three hours north. Does he know?"

"We've tried contacting him, but his facility has a strict no-phones policy during the early phases of treatment," Morales replied. "We'll reach out to his case manager at dawn. He has the right to be informed immediately, especially since his consent was manipulated when your parents took emergency guardianship after his accident."
