Chapter 9 - A Mountain’s Vengeance

Six months later.
The dark clouds that had hung over the city of Chicago for decades had finally cleared. The Russo crime syndicate was officially no more. With Vincent’s complete cooperation, federal authorities dismantled the entire illegal enterprise. Lorenzo and his conspirators were sentenced to life in prison, while Don Salvatore Russo, true to his word, surrendered his ill-gotten wealth and retired to a quiet, isolated monastery in southern Italy to spend his remaining days seeking spiritual redemption.
The vast fortunes recovered from the Vela vault were used to establish the Katarina Vela Foundation, a massive non-profit organization dedicated to building affordable housing, providing women’s career training, and supporting underprivileged families across the city.
And at the heart of Chicago’s grandest historic neighborhood stood a brand-new restaurant: La Vela.
Unlike Trattoria Delombra, La Vela was warm, bright, and welcoming to everyone. The aisles were wide and lined with beautiful oak tables, fresh mountain flowers, and photos of the Sicilian highlands. There was no dress code, no snobbery, and no cruel managers.
Claret stood in the center of the bustling main dining room, wearing an elegant burgundy dress that accentuated her gorgeous curves. She was the owner, founder, and head culinary director of La Vela.
"Table four needs more bread, Claret!" one of her waitresses called out merrily.
"On it!" Claret smiled, picking up a basket of warm, freshly baked rosemary focaccia.
As she turned around, she bumped directly into a tall, handsome man in a tailored blue suit.
"Watch where you’re going, gorgeous," Vincent teased, catching her by the waist and pulling her gently against his chest.
Claret laughed, placing her hands on his shoulders. "You’re standing in the middle of my aisle, Mr. Russo."
"I own half this building, Miss Vela," Vincent whispered playfully, leaning down to kiss her cheek. "I think I’m allowed to stand wherever I want—especially if it means being close to you."
Vincent had completely transformed his life. He had discarded his mob ties, cleared his name, and was now running a legitimate real estate development firm focused on building green, sustainable housing for low-income communities. He looked happier, healthier, and deeply in love.
Suddenly, the front door of the restaurant chimed, and a familiar, sour-faced woman walked in, holding a resume in her trembling hands.
It was Beatrice, Claret’s former manager from Trattoria Delombra.

After the scandal and collapse of the old restaurant, Beatrice had been fired and had struggled to find work anywhere in the city. She looked nervous, shifting her weight from foot to foot as she approached the owner’s counter.
"Claret?" Beatrice stammered, unable to meet Claret’s eyes. "I... I saw the help-wanted sign in the window."
