Chapter 8 - Unmasking the Executioner

They rushed back to the dying Don, who was slipping in and out of consciousness on the medical gurney just outside the vault chamber. His skin had turned a sickening shade of blue-gray, and his pulse was a faint, thready flutter.

Claret unsealed the ancient silver vial. Inside was a dense, aromatic liquid that smelled of wild thyme, pine needle oil, and mountain honey. Guided by the instructions her grandmother had once whispered to her, Claret gently lifted Salvatore’s head and administered the blue liquid drop by drop onto his tongue.

For two terrifying minutes, nothing happened. The heart monitor beeped erratically, slowing down to a agonizingly long pause between beats.

Beep...

Beep...

Beep...

Suddenly, Salvatore gasped violently, taking a deep, ragged breath of air. His eyes flew open, the cloudy gray sheen dissolving as healthy color slowly began to return to his cheeks. The erratic racing of his heart stabilized into a strong, rhythmic beat.

The neurotoxin had been neutralized.

Salvatore looked up at Claret, his eyes filled with a complex mixture of shock, profound relief, and genuine shame. He weakly reached out his trembling hand, touching the edge of her sleeve.

"You... you saved my life..." Salvatore whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "After everything I did... after everything I said... why?"

Claret looked down at the former Don, her expression calm and composed.

"Because my grandmother taught me that true power isn't the ability to kill your enemies," Claret said softly. "It’s the strength to show mercy to those who don't deserve it. My family was never destroyed, Salvatore. We just chose a better way to live."

Salvatore closed his eyes, tears escaping down his wrinkled face. "The Vela bloodline... is truly noble."

Just then, the sound of heavy boots echoed down the catacomb corridor. Vincent immediately stepped forward, gun raised, but relaxed as a squad of federal agents and city police officers flooded the underground chamber, led by Vincent’s trusted legal counsel.

"Vincent Russo?" the lead agent asked.

"I’m Vincent," he replied, lowering his weapon. "The traitor Lorenzo is inside, along with his mercenaries. I have all the ledgers, documents, and proof of forty years of organized crime stored inside this vault. I’m turning everything over to the authorities."

The agent looked shocked. "You’re surrendering the entire Russo syndicate?"

"I’m dismantling it," Vincent corrected, turning to look at Claret with a radiant smile. "I’m choosing a different future."
