Chapter 4 - A Sanctuary of Secrets

The interior of Villa Delombra was a stunning contrast to the rain slicked outside world. High ceilings, sweeping marble staircases, and oil paintings of Sicilian landscapes filled the grand foyer. Yet despite the luxury, the house felt like a gilded cage. Armed guards stood at every corner, their eyes darting nervously toward the upper floor.

Vincent led Claret up a grand staircase to a quiet wing of the estate. He opened a heavy oak door, revealing a lavish guest suite complete with a roaring fireplace, a king-sized bed, and a private dressing room.

"You'll be safe here for tonight," Vincent said, walking over to the hearth and stoking the fire. "Lorenzo’s men won't dare attack my personal estate. They know I’d burn the whole city down before I let them touch you."

Claret walked over to the fire, warming her hands over the flickering orange flames. "Why are you doing this, Vincent? Why protect me? I spoke to your father like he was dirt. I insulted him in front of his entire crew."

Vincent turned to face her. In the warm glow of the firelight, his dark eyes held a profound, raw intensity.

"Because my father deserved every word you said," Vincent said quietly, stepping closer to her. "For thirty years, I’ve watched him rule through fear, cruelty, and bigotry. He treats people like commodities. Tonight, when he called you those horrible things, I felt an overpowering urge to tear his throat out myself."

He reached out, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of wet hair from Claret’s face. Claret held her breath, mesmerized by his touch.

"I’ve watched you at the restaurant for six months, Claret," Vincent confessed, his voice dropping to a low, husky whisper. "I watched how gracefully you handled the mean-spirited nonsense from Beatrice. I watched how you carried yourself with dignity even when the world was blind to your beauty. You have a soul made of pure gold, Claret. In my world, everyone is rotten to the core. But you... you are real."

Claret’s heart skipped a beat. All her life, she had been told she was too big, too loud, too much. Society had taught her to shrink herself, to hide in the background, to apologize for existing. But Vincent looked at her as if she were the only woman in the universe.

"Vincent..." she whispered, her hands resting softly against his chest. She could feel the steady, rapid beat of his heart beneath his shirt. "I don't know how to navigate this world. I'm afraid."

"You don't have to navigate it alone," Vincent promised, placing his hand over hers. "As long as I’m breathing, no one will ever hurt you again. But tomorrow morning, we have to make a choice. Salvatore wants to see you. He knows who you are now."

"Does he want to kill me?"

May you like

"He wants to live," Vincent replied grimly. "And he knows that the only cure for the poison in his veins is stored inside the Vela vault—a rare antidote that your grandmother’s people created decades ago to protect themselves against dark assassinations. If you open the vault, my father lives. If you refuse, he dies in thirty-six hours."

Claret looked into the fire, the weight of the decision resting heavily on her shoulders. The man who had destroyed her family’s legacy, the man who had called her a cow and threatened to cut out her tongue, now held his life in her hands.
