Chapter 9 - The New Dawn

One year later, the atmosphere at the Castellane estate was unrecognizable from the cold, secretive fortress it had once been. The heavy, dark drapes had been replaced with bright, airy fabrics that let the golden California sunshine stream through the windows.
Elena sat at the grand mahogany desk in the library—the very room where she had once hidden in terror—reviewing the foundation's latest medical reports. Under her leadership, the foundation had built over fifty free clinics across the country. No mother would ever have to skip a meal to buy an inhaler for her child again.
Mateo and Lily burst into the room, giggling hysterically, their faces covered in chocolate frosting. They were playing tag, their laughter ringing loud, clear, and perfectly healthy through the high ceilings.
Julian walked in behind them, holding two cups of coffee. He handed one to Elena, looking out at the children with deep contentment.
"They're growing up fast," Julian said, sitting down opposite her. "Mateo passed his physical with flying colors today. The doctors say his lungs are completely clear."

"No, Elena. Thank you," Julian replied gently. "You taught this family how to breathe again. You brought heart back into these walls."
