Chapter 2 - The Uncommon Thread

The adrenaline crash left Elena’s hands trembling as she returned to the east tower, but Julian Castellane did not let her slip away into the anonymity of her housekeeping duties. The very next morning, Elena was summoned not to the housekeeping manager's cramped basement office, but to the penthouse suite.

Julian sat behind a massive mahogany desk, but the intimidating aura of the billionaire mogul was entirely absent. He looked like a man who hadn't slept a wink. Beside him sat Lily, coloring a picture book, looking vibrant and completely recovered.

"Please, sit, Elena," Julian said, his voice carrying a deep, gravelly warmth. "Lily wanted to thank you herself."

Lily looked up, her wide brown eyes shining. She handed Elena a crudely drawn picture of a woman with a cape. "You're the superhero lady," Lily whispered, wrapping her small arms around Elena’s waist. Elena hugged her back tightly, her mind flashing to her own son, Mateo.

Julian watched the interaction with an intense, searching expression. "Elena, I looked into your employment file. You’ve been working twelve-hour shifts, yet your supervisor says you’ve never been late, never complained. And I see you have a son."

"Yes, Mr. Castellane. Mateo. He is seven, same as Lily."

"I want to offer you a position," Julian said, leaning forward. "Not as a housekeeper. I want you to be Lily’s primary guardian and companion when I am away. The previous nanny has been dismissed. I will triple your current salary, cover Mateo’s medical expenses entirely, and provide you both housing on the estate."

Elena’s breath hitched. For two years, she had skipped meals to afford Mateo's inhalers and specialist appointments. "Mr. Castellane, I don't know what to say. This... this changes everything for my son."

"You saved my daughter's life, Elena. It's the least I can do."

As Elena stood up to accept, her hand accidentally brushed against a framed black-and-white photograph on Julian's desk. It was an old family portrait of Julian as a teenager, standing next to his parents and a younger brother. Elena froze. Her gaze locked onto the matriarch in the photo—Julian’s mother, the late Eleanor Castellane.

Eleanor was wearing a very distinct, custom-designed silver locket shaped like a double-layered lotus blossom.

Elena's hand instinctively flew to her own collarbone. Tucked beneath her uniform shirt was the exact same silver locket. It was the only heirloom her own mother, Clara, had given her on her deathbed, with a strict warning: “Never show this to anyone in the city, Elena. It belongs to a past that almost destroyed us.”

Elena quickly tucked her panic away, nodded her thanks, and left the room, her heart pounding with a completely new kind of fear.
