Chapter 9 - The New Dawn

Three months later, the New York waterfront looked brighter under the autumn sun. The cold chill of winter was beginning to settle over the harbor, but inside Rory Starks’s office on the top floor of the central shipping terminal, the atmosphere was one of absolute control and enduring peace.
The legal fallout from Arthur and Susan Vance’s betrayal had been swift and absolute. Stripped of their wealth, abandoned by their underworld associates in the Morosco syndicate—who had themselves been systematically dismantled by federal indictments and Starks's counter-offensives—the conspirators now faced decades in a maximum-security federal penitentiary. Not a single asset remained in their name.
Rory stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the massive container ships glide smoothly into their berths below.
His phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. He picked it up to see a secure live video feed from the Long Island estate’s private courtyard.
On the screen, six-year-old Lily and Rose were running across the green lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Rory had gotten them the previous week. Their laughter echoed clearly through the phone speakers—bright, musical, and completely unburdened by fear or pain.
They were sleeping through every night now. The dark circles under their eyes were long gone, replaced by rosy cheeks and the vibrant energy of healthy, happy children.
Marcus stepped quietly into the office, holding a fresh cup of coffee and a final set of audit reports.
“Everything is clean, Boss,” Marcus reported, placing the folder on the desk. “The remaining port authorities in Brooklyn have fully transitioned under our direct compliance umbrella. Not a whisper of opposition left in the tri-state area.”
Rory nodded, setting his phone down with a faint, genuine smile.

“Good. Make sure the security protocols around the house remain airtight, Marcus. But keep them discreet. I want my daughters to grow up feeling free, not caged.”
“Understood, Mr. Starks. Always.”
