Chapter 8 - Unraveling the Web

With a sharp motion, Rory shoved Arthur away, sending him crashing unceremoniously to the floor where he curled into a fetal position, gasping for air.

“Marcus,” Rory said without looking back.

“Boss?”

“Lock him in the lower wine cellar. Strip him of all communication devices. Bring Susan down from the guest house and put her in the adjoining room. I want every single asset they control frozen by sunrise. Every bank account, every property deed, every offshore shell company—I want it all wiped out before the sun comes up.”

“Consider it done, Mr. Starks,” Marcus said, signaling the guards to haul the weeping attorney out of the nursery.

As the heavy footsteps faded down the hallway, Rory turned back toward the twin beds.

Lily and Rose were watching him with wide, solemn eyes. The terrible humming sound that had plagued their nights for fifty-six days was finally gone, replaced by the gentle sound of the ocean outside their window.

Rory walked over, dropping to his knees once more between their beds. He tossed the remaining pieces of the destroyed teddy bear into the wastebasket by the door, then climbed up slightly, sitting on the edge of the mattress between his two little girls.

“Daddy,” Lily whispered softly, leaning her head against his shoulder. “Is the monster gone?”

Rory wrapped his arms around both of them, burying his face in their soft hair as a single tear finally broke free and tracked down his scarred cheek.

“Yes, my darlings,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “The monster is gone. And it's never coming back.”

For the first time in three years, the Starks estate fell into a truly peaceful sleep. The nightmare orchestrated by greedy relatives had been violently ripped apart, leaving behind a father determined to protect his family at any cost.
