Chapter 6 - Tearing Open the Bear
Rory gently laid his crying daughters back against their pillows, whispering soft reassurances as he stood up and walked over to the golden-brown teddy bear lying on the nursery floor.
The strange, oscillatory buzzing seemed to emanate directly from its plush center, growing sharper as he drew closer.
Without hesitation, Rory reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy-duty folding hunting knife. With a flick of his wrist, the steel blade locked into place, gleaming coldly in the dim nursery light.
“Daddy, what are you doing to Mr. Honey?” Lily sniffled, wiping a tear from her cheek as she watched her father with wide, frightened eyes.
“Just checking something, my angels,” Rory said, his voice steady and gentle despite the dark fury raging inside him. “Dad is going to make the bad noise stop forever.”
He knelt beside the toy, grabbed the bear by its soft brown ear, and drove the blade deep into its chest seam.
Thick stuffing spilled out onto the hardwood floor, followed immediately by a sharp, static-filled squeal of feedback. Rory sliced open the remaining fabric, tearing the plush casing apart with his bare hands, heedless of the cotton and synthetic stuffing flying everywhere.
Buried deep inside the core of the teddy bear, nestled right against a small electronic speaker unit, was a sophisticated micro-transmitter wired to a miniature lithium-ion battery pack and a high-frequency acoustic wave generator.
It was a custom-built psychological warfare device designed to emit a continuous, subliminal, high-frequency sound wave—one that human adults could barely register, but which caused severe neurological distress, auditory hallucinations, and agonizing pressure inside the skulls of young children over extended periods of exposure.
