Chapter 7 - The Trial Track

By 6:00 PM, the custom Gen 7 Apex was ready.

Dr. Vance and his engineering team assisted Annie into the testing facility, which featured a long track replicating various terrains: asphalt, gravel, inclines, stairs, and uneven cobblestone.

Annie sat on the edge of the examination table as Dr. Vance secured the carbon-fiber socket to her leg. The fit was seamless, vacuum-sealed with precision skin-contact sensors that eliminated the need for uncomfortable straps or heavy harnesses.

"Alright, Annie," Dr. Vance said, stepping back with a diagnostic tablet. "The microprocessor is synced to your muscle impulses. Take it slow."

Annie stood up.

There was no clinking metal. No slipping locking pin. No immediate tightening of her jaw to brace for pain.

The leg responded instantaneously to her weight, smoothly stabilizing her stance. She took her first step forward. The knee bent with fluid grace, absorbing the impact and propelling her forward with subtle power.

She took another step. Then another.

Within seconds, she was walking down the center of the testing track. She walked past the gravel section, stepped onto the incline, and seamlessly transitioned up a flight of stairs without stopping or holding onto the handrail.

Jonathan watched from the observation deck as tears welled in the young woman's eyes. She began to pick up her pace, moving from a walk to a light jog down the synthetic track, laughing aloud as the advanced leg adapted perfectly to every footfall.

She stopped near the end of the track, turning back toward Jonathan and the engineering team. She jumped once, landing lightly and securely on both feet.

"How does it feel?" Jonathan called down.

Annie looked down at her leg, then up at Jonathan, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "It feels like... it feels like it isn't even there. It just feels like my own leg."
