Chapter 10 - Walking Forward
Six months later.
The morning sun streamed through the glass windows of the Charlotte service center, which had undergone a complete transformation. The cramped supply closet was gone, replaced by an expanded, state-of-the-art repair and customization bay where interns and technicians worked with high-end tools and 3D printing equipment.
In the main customer hall, an elderly man sat nervously in a chair, holding a walking cane. His daughter stood beside him, holding a box containing his new prosthetic knee.
The door opened, and Annie walked in.
She wore a crisp tailor-made blazer, carrying her original red notebook—now bound in fine leather—under her arm. Her stride was strong, fluid, and effortless.
"Mr. Talbot?" Annie said with a warm smile, walking up to the man.
The old man looked up, his face brightening with recognition. "Annie? The voice on the phone?"
"That’s me," Annie said, sitting down beside him on a low stool. "I told you we'd get this sorted out. Ready to take a look at your new leg?"
From the doorway near the entrance, Jonathan Bennett stood quietly, watching the interaction. Next to him, Daniel handed over a tablet with the quarterly reports.
"Service satisfaction ratings are up sixty percent across all regional centers, sir," Daniel reported in a quiet voice. "And the new passive bypass valve Annie designed is officially entering mass production this month. It’s projected to help over fifty thousand low-income patients worldwide this year alone."
Jonathan watched Annie as she carefully helped the elderly man fit his new device, listening patiently as he talked about his grand-kids and his garden.
"How are the numbers, Daniel?" Jonathan asked softly.
"Stronger than ever, sir," Daniel replied.

Jonathan smiled, his gaze resting on the young woman who had walked into a supply closet with a broken leg and ended up changing the heart of his entire corporation.
"Some things," Jonathan said quietly, turning to walk toward his car, "you can't measure on a spreadsheet."
