Chapter 10 - Forever Home

Five years later, the golden afternoon sun streamed through the wide bay windows of our living room, illuminating a house that was always filled with music, laughter, and the joyful chaos of two growing teenagers.

Emma was fifteen now, a brilliant honor student with a fierce passion for debate and environmental science, while Lily was thirteen, an artistic, creative soul who spent hours painting vibrant landscapes on canvases set up in our sunroom. Barnaby, now a majestic and slightly lazy golden retriever, slept soundly on the plush rug right between their desks.

I stood by the kitchen counter, pouring three tall glasses of iced lemonade, watching them argue good-naturedly over who was going to control the Bluetooth speaker for our evening barbecue.

"It is my turn to pick the playlist, Em! You played your indie folk songs all yesterday afternoon!" Lily protested with a dramatic, theatrical sigh.

"Indie folk builds character, Lil," Emma retorted with a grin, though she was already handing over her phone with a laugh. "Fine, put on whatever pop music you want, as long as it doesn't sound like angry robots."

I smiled to myself, setting the tray of lemonade down on the wooden patio table outside.

My phone buzzed on the counter. I picked it up, expecting a client email or a message from Evelyn about our upcoming foundation gala. Instead, it was a notification from the state Department of Corrections—a standard legal notice informing me that Sarah's initial petition for early parole review had been formally and permanently denied by the federal appeals board.

I locked the screen, placed the phone face down on the counter, and didn't give it another thought.

Some ghosts don't need to be fought forever; they simply fade into irrelevance when they are replaced by something infinitely stronger, brighter, and truer.

"Mom! The burgers are going to burn if you don't flip them!" Emma called out from the back lawn, waving a pair of long metal tongs in the air with dramatic flair.

"Coming, General!" I laughed, walking out into the warm, fragrant sunshine, surrounded by the family I had fought for, the life I had built with my own hands, and a future that belonged entirely to us.

We had made it through the storm, and on the other side, we found our forever home.
