Chapter 7 - The Trial’s Conclusion

By late autumn, the federal trial against Sarah reached its final phase. Because the mountain of digital and medical evidence was overwhelming—featuring detailed bank transfers, encrypted chat logs with dark-market brokers, and testimonies from other recruited family proxies—Sarah’s defense counsel offered a plea bargain in exchange for a slightly reduced sentencing recommendation.

I chose to attend the final sentencing hearing, not out of malice or a desire for revenge, but because I needed to close that chapter of my life with my own eyes. Emma and Lily were spending the afternoon with our kind neighbor, Mrs. Gable, who was teaching them how to bake cinnamon rolls.

Sitting in the polished wood and brass courtroom, I watched as Sarah was led in by federal marshals. She looked different—her designer clothes replaced by a standard orange jumpsuit, her hair pulled back into a simple, unstyled ponytail without any makeup to hide the hard, bitter lines around her mouth.

When she caught sight of me sitting in the second row, her eyes flared with a fleeting spark of her old arrogance, but it quickly dissolved into a hollow, defeated stare. She looked away, focusing her gaze on the polished mahogany defense table.

The federal judge, a stern woman with sharp silver hair and rimless glasses, reviewed the final briefs before speaking.

"Ms. Sarah Miller," the judge said, her voice echoing clearly through the quiet courtroom. "Your actions represent a profound and calculated betrayal of the most vulnerable members of our society—children entrusted to your care, whose health and safety you commodified for personal financial gain. Greed of this magnitude is both staggering and unforgiving."

The judge paused, adjusting her glasses before reading the final verdict.

"For counts of wire fraud, illicit medical trafficking, and aggravated child endangerment, this court sentences you to twenty-two years in federal prison, with no possibility of parole for the first fourteen years. Additionally, all remaining assets are forfeit to restitution funds for the victims."

Gavel struck wood. Thud.

It was a clean, final sound. There was no theatrical drama, no cinematic twist—just the cold, unyielding machinery of justice doing what it was designed to do.

As the marshals escorted Sarah out through the side door, she didn't look back. I stood up, buttoned my coat, and walked out into the crisp autumn air. The sky above the courthouse was vast and clear, a brilliant expanse of sapphire blue. The storm was officially over.
