Chapter 6 - Healing Horizons
Spring gave way to a bright, warm summer, turning our small backyard into a lush oasis of green grass, blooming hydrangeas, and a bright red plastic slide that Emma and Lily spent hours racing down.
The physical scars on Lily's shoulder had faded into thin, silvery lines, and thanks to weekly sessions with a wonderful pediatric therapist named Dr. Hayes, the nocturnal nightmares that had plagued her first few weeks with us had almost entirely stopped. She no longer flinched when someone raised their voice or walked into a room too quickly. She laughed easily, ran freely, and ate her breakfast with the robust appetite of a healthy six-year-old.
For my part, I had taken a brave step in my own life. With the financial stability provided by the court-ordered restitution and my own freelance graphic design work, I finally enrolled in night classes to finish my business degree—something Sarah had always discouraged, claiming I "didn't have the head for administration."
"Mommy! Look how high I can swing!" Emma shouted from the wooden swing set, pumping her legs toward the cloudless blue sky.
"I see you, sweetie! Keep your toes pointed!" I called out from the patio table, where I was reviewing marketing briefs for a local boutique client.
Lily sat beside me on the bench, coloring a picture of a magnificent golden retriever wearing a superhero cape. She looked up, her dark eyes bright and intelligent. "Aunt Clara, can we adopt a dog? A real one, just like the one in my drawing?"

I smiled, setting my tablet down and wrapping an arm around her small shoulders. "You know what? I think it's high time our household expanded by four legs and a wagging tail."
Lily let out a squeal of pure joy, jumping up and running over to tell Emma the good news. Watching them race across the lawn, their bright summer dresses catching the afternoon breeze, I felt a deep, profound sense of peace settle over my heart. The past was a locked door we had firmly bolted shut; our future was wide open, bathed in golden sunlight.
