Chapter 8 - A New Chapter

Two years flew by in a blur of school plays, soccer practices, spelling bees, and quiet, ordinary weekend mornings filled with pancake batter and cartoon theme songs.
Lily had just turned eight years old, and her birthday party was a magnificent, chaotic affair held in our backyard, complete with a professional magician who made doves appear from top hats and a golden retriever puppy named Barnaby who spent most of the afternoon trying to steal slices of birthday cake.
Emma, now ten, stood proudly beside Lily as she blew out the eight sparkling candles on her strawberry shortcake.
"Make a big wish!" Emma urged, clapping her hands excitedly.
Lily closed her eyes tightly, her small face scrunched up in deep concentration, before blowing out every single candle in one mighty breath. The backyard erupted into cheers and applause from our neighborhood friends, supportive teachers, and Evelyn—our lawyer, who had become a cherished family friend and honorary aunt to the girls.
Later that evening, after the guests had gone and the house finally quieted down, I sat on the edge of Lily’s bed while she tucked Barnaby the puppy in beside her.
"Aunt Clara?" Lily asked softly, looking up at me with eyes full of absolute trust and security.
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Do you think we'll always live in this house?"
I smiled, stroking her soft hair and pulling the quilt up to her chin. "As long as you and Emma want to. This is our home. Nobody is ever going to take it away from us, and nothing is ever going to hurt you again. I promise."
Lily smiled sleepily, wrapping her arms around Barnaby's warm neck. "I love you, Mom."
The word slipped out naturally, without hesitation or second thought. It wasn't the first time she had called me that, but every single time it happened, it felt like a warm sunbeam breaking through the clouds.
"I love you too, my sweet girl," I whispered, kissing her forehead.

I turned off the bedside lamp, leaving the soft, comforting glow of the star-shaped nightlight on the wall.
Walking down the hallway, I paused by Emma's open door. She was fast asleep too, hugging a stuffed panda bear, looking peaceful and completely safe.
