Chapter 9 - The Echoes of Grace

A year to the day since the fateful midnight text message lit up his phone, Matteo Ricci sat in his private study, the mahogany desk clean and orderly except for a small, framed crayon drawing resting neatly in the corner: OUR HERO.

The phone on his desk buzzed.

Matteo glanced down at the screen. It wasn't an encrypted line from a lieutenant or a warning from an informant. It was a regular text notification from a familiar, saved contact.

Dad, are you coming inside yet? Dinner is getting cold, and Ghost ate one of my slippers!

Matteo let out a low, deep chuckle that resonated with genuine happiness. He picked up the phone, his fingers typing out a quick reply without a single trace of hesitation.

On my way, sweetheart.

He locked the phone, stood up from his desk, and adjusted his cuffs. As he walked out of the study and down the brightly lit hallway toward the sound of laughter and music echoing from the dining room, he passed a full-length mirror.

He didn't see the cold, ruthless Ghost of the North End anymore. He saw a man who had fought his own demons, faced the ghosts of his past, and found redemption in the most unexpected place imaginable—a wrong number dialed by a terrified little girl in the dark.

He pushed open the dining room doors, stepping into the warmth, the light, and the unbreakable embrace of a future he had finally earned.
