Chapter 10 - Forever Home
The dining room was alive with warmth, the scent of home-cooked pasta mingling with the crisp autumn air drifting in through the open terrace doors. Lily sat at the head of the table, chattering excitedly about her day at school while the golden retriever, Ghost, rested its heavy head contentedly on her lap, occasionally snapping up a stray crumb.
Sarah stood near the kitchen counter, pouring fresh iced tea into tall crystal glasses. When she turned and saw Matteo standing in the doorway, framed by the warm golden light of the chandelier, she paused, a tender, knowing smile spreading across her face.
"You made it," Sarah said softly as he approached the table.
"I promised I would," Matteo replied, pulling out his chair and sitting down. He looked around the table—at the bright, joyous face of the little girl who had changed his destiny with a single mistyped digit, and at the woman who had brought peace to his chaotic world.
Lily suddenly piped up, bouncing slightly in her seat. "Mr. Matteo—oops, I mean, Dad! Can we tell the story tonight? The story about how we met?"
Matteo chuckled, reaching across the table to gently tap the tip of her nose with his finger. "Every year, Lily? You already know it by heart."
"I want to hear it again," she insisted with a bright, infectious grin. "About how I dialed the wrong number, and how my hero came driving through the dark like a superhero in a movie."
Matteo looked from Lily to Sarah, his heart swelling with a deep, unbreakable sense of peace. The past—with all its blood, silence, and sorrow—was finally put to rest. The promise he had made to a dying little girl named Emma twenty-five years ago had not only been kept; it had found its way home.
