Chapter 7 - A New Dawn

Two weeks later, the private recovery suite at the hospital was filled with the soft, warm glow of morning sunlight streaming through the large bay windows. A colorful arrangement of fresh daisies and yellow tulips sat on the bedside table, accompanied by a basket of pastel-wrapped gifts.

Sarah Evans sat up against her pillows, looking significantly better. Though her skin was still pale and a faint yellowish bruise lingered along her jawline, the color had returned to her cheeks. Her dark eyes, filled with a mixture of overwhelming gratitude and lingering disbelief, were fixed on the man standing quietly by the window.

Matteo Ricci looked out over the city skyline, dressed in his usual impeccably tailored dark suit, though he had discarded his jacket over the back of a nearby chair.

"The doctors say you can be discharged by tomorrow afternoon," Matteo said, his voice measured and calm. "Your apartment has been completely renovated, security systems have been upgraded to military grade, and all past debts associated with Marcus have been legally wiped clean. He is never going to bother you or Lily again."

Sarah swallowed hard, her voice trembling slightly as she spoke. "Mr. Ricci... I don't even know how to begin to thank you. Victor told me... he told me what you did. You saved my life. And more importantly... you protected my little girl."

Matteo turned away from the window, his expression softening just a fraction as he looked at her. "You don't need to thank me, Sarah. It was a transaction of sorts. I answered a message that was meant for someone else."

"A wrong number," Sarah whispered, a faint, watery smile touching her lips as she glanced over toward the adjoining room where Lily was currently drawing pictures with a set of new colored pencils provided by Victor. "Lily told me she accidentally typed an extra digit when she was trying to call her aunt. She thought she was texting a family member."

"Fate works in strange ways," Matteo replied softly.

Just then, the door pushed open, and little Lily trotted into the room, holding up a piece of construction paper covered in bright pink and blue crayons.

"Mr. Matteo! Look!" Lily chirped happily, running straight toward him without a shred of the terror she had shown weeks ago. She held up a drawing depicting a tall stick figure in a black suit standing next to a smiling little girl and a woman with a halo. At the top of the page, written in clumsy, childish handwriting, were the words: OUR HERO.

Matteo knelt down on one knee, taking the paper from her small hands. He looked at the drawing for a long moment, feeling a strange, unfamiliar warmth spreading outward from his chest.

"It's a masterpiece, Lily," Matteo said, his voice thick with emotion he hadn't felt in decades. He carefully folded the paper and slipped it into his breast pocket, right next to his heart.

Sarah watched them, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "What happens now, Mr. Ricci? A man like you... you have enemies, a dangerous life. We can't just pretend nothing happened."

Matteo stood up, looking between the mother and daughter who had accidentally stumbled into his dark, isolated fortress and turned it into a home.

"Nothing has to change about who I am," Matteo said with quiet conviction. "Except for one thing. From this day forward, no one in this city will ever touch either of you. You will want for nothing. And whenever you need me... you won't need a wrong number to reach me."
