Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

The private medical facility on the outskirts of Boston was silent, lit only by the sterile, humming fluorescent lights of the intensive care unit. Outside the double doors, Matteo Ricci sat rigidly on a stiff plastic chair, his long legs crossed, fingers steepled beneath his chin. His expensive suit was slightly rumpled, a faint smudge of dirt on the lapel—the only outward signs of the violence he had unleashed hours earlier.
The operating room doors slid open with a soft hiss, and Dr. Vance, the head surgeon and a man who owed his medical license—and his life—to Matteo, stepped out into the hallway, pulling off his surgical mask.
Matteo stood up immediately, his piercing eyes demanding answers before a word was spoken. "Well?"
"She’s stable, Mr. Ricci," Dr. Vance said, letting out a heavy sigh of relief. "It was touch and go for a while. Severe internal bleeding, multiple fractures to her ribs, and a concussion. If you had arrived even ten minutes later... she wouldn't have made it. But she’s strong. She’s currently in an induced coma to let her body begin the healing process, but barring any unforeseen complications, she will survive."
Matteo gave a single, curt nod. "Make sure she gets the private VIP wing. Double the security detail outside her door. No one gets in unless I personally clear them."
"Consider it done," Dr. Vance replied, giving a respectful nod before heading back toward the surgical ward.
Matteo turned away from the doors and walked down the quiet corridor toward a private recovery suite at the end of the hall. Inside, curled up on a plush sofa under a thick wool blanket, little Lily was fast asleep. The exhaustion of the night had finally claimed her, her breathing deep and even, though her small face still bore the faint traces of dried tears.
He quietly opened the door and stepped inside, moving with silent footsteps so as not to wake her. He pulled a chair closer to the sofa and sat down, resting his elbows on his knees as he watched her sleep.
For the first time in twenty-five years, the memories he had locked away behind iron bars broke free, demanding to be heard.
1999. A dingy charity hospital in Chicago.
Matteo had been just a kid then—hardened by the streets, running errands for local hoods just to survive. He had wandered into the wrong ward and met Emma, a girl with leukemia who spent her days drawing pictures of angels and writing notes to a world that had forgotten her. They had spent three hours talking, sharing stale crackers and dreams of a future neither of them would ever realistically see.
When he told her he was going to be a tough guy, a boss who ruled the streets so no one could ever hurt him, Emma had looked at him with sad, knowing eyes.
"Being tough isn't about hurting people, Matteo," she had whispered, coughing softly. "It's about having the courage to protect the people who can't protect themselves. Promise me you won't forget that."
The next day, Emma was gone. And Matteo, consumed by grief and rage at a cruel world, had taken the first part of her advice—he became tough, ruthless, and untouchable—while completely abandoning the second. He built an empire of fear, convincing himself that feeling nothing was the only way to survive.
He looked down at Lily now, sleeping peacefully under his coat.
A wrong number. A random typo of digits in the dead of night. Or perhaps, something more—a ghost from the past reaching across a quarter of a century to remind him of a promise he had left unfulfilled.
The door clicked open softly, and Victor stepped into the room, holding a secure tablet.
"Boss," Victor murmured, keeping his voice low. "We ran the background check on the mother and the address. Her name is Sarah Evans. Single mother, working two jobs. The man who attacked her is her ex-boyfriend, Marcus Vance—no relation to the doctor. A low-level loan shark who has been shaking her down for gambling debts she didn't even know he accumulated in her name."
"Where is Marcus now?" Matteo asked, his voice dropping to a low, glacial hum.
May you like
"In our basement," Victor replied calmly. "Waiting for your instructions."
Matteo stood up slowly, smoothing the wrinkles from his suit jacket. His eyes were cold, filled with an absolute, terrifying finality. "Let's go have a conversation with Mr. Vance."
