Chapter 9 - The Vows Unbroken

Six months after Luca’s second birthday, the grand chapel on the Moretti estate was decorated with thousands of white roses and flickering candles. It was a crisp, beautiful spring evening.

They had decided to renew their vows—not under the shadow of a shotgun arrangement or legal maneuverings, but as a true celebration of the love they had fought through hell to reclaim.

Giovanni stood at the altar, looking handsomely striking in a classic black tuxedo. His heart, which had once been described by his enemies as a block of New York ice, was beating frantically against his ribs.

The heavy oak doors of the chapel opened, and the string quartet began to play a soft, sweeping melody.

First came Luca, now two and a half, looking adorable in a miniature tuxedo, proudly carrying a small satin pillow with the rings. He took his job very seriously, marching down the aisle with a stubborn, focused expression that brought warm laughter from the small gathering of loved ones.

And then, Lauren appeared.

She took everyone’s breath away. She wore a stunning, off-the-shoulder gown of ivory lace. In her arms, she gently cradled their three-month-old daughter, Mia. Mia was a beautiful baby girl with Lauren’s bright hazel eyes and a tuft of soft, dark Moretti hair. Lauren walked down the aisle with a radiant, effortless grace, her eyes locked entirely onto the man waiting for her at the altar.

When she reached him, Giovanni gently took Mia from her arms, handing the sleeping infant to Jessica, who was sitting in the front pew next to Luca.

Giovanni took Lauren’s hands in his, his large, warm palms enveloping her shaking fingers.

The priest smiled, looking at the couple. "Giovanni, please repeat after me."

Giovanni didn't wait for the priest. He looked directly into Lauren’s eyes, his voice deep, clear, and vibrating with an absolute, lifelong devotion.

"Lauren," Giovanni said, ignoring the script. "Three years ago, I let the darkness of my world drive you away. I thought that by pushing you out of my life, I was keeping you safe. I was a fool. The day you called me from that hospital, my entire world changed. You gave me a son, and three months ago, you gave me a daughter. But most importantly, you gave me a soul."

A tear spilled down Lauren’s cheek, and Giovanni reached up, his thumb gently wiping it away.

"I swear to you today, before God and our children, that my hands will only ever be used to protect you, to build for you, and to hold you. I am no longer a king of the dark. I am your husband, I am their father, and my love for you is the only law I will ever follow for the rest of my days."

Lauren choked back a sob, her fingers tightening around his. "Giovanni... when I ran, I thought I was protecting our child from a monster. But when you burst into that hospital room in Boston, I didn't see a monster. I saw a man who would tear the world apart to save his son. You fought through the darkness to bring us into the light. I take you again, today and forever, not out of fear, and not out of necessity, but because you are my home. I love you, Giovanni."

"By the power vested in me," the priest said, smiling warmly at the raw emotion filling the chapel, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Giovanni, you may kiss your bride."

Giovanni pulled her into his arms, his lips meeting hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their past, celebrated their present, and welcomed their beautiful, bright future. In the front pew, Luca clapped his hands loudly, shouting, "Yay, Mommy and Daddy!" while little baby Mia let out a soft, tiny coo in her sleep.
