Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Past

The words hung in the sterile, bleach-scented air of the pediatric wing like a death sentence. They know about the boy.
Giovanni did not flinch, but Lauren felt the temperature in the room plummet. The man who had just been whispering softly to a sick infant transformed in a fraction of a second. The vulnerability vanished, replaced by the terrifying, calculating aura of the underboss who had ruled New York’s underworld with an iron fist.
He turned slowly, his dark eyes locking onto his head of security, Marco. "How many?" Giovanni’s voice was dangerously low, a contrast to the frantic beeping of Luca’s heart monitor.
"Three vehicles spotted crossing the Charlestown Bridge, Boss," Marco replied, his hand instinctively resting near the lapel of his jacket where his firearm was concealed. "They’re Valenti’s men. They must have had a tail on your helicopter the moment it cleared Manhattan airspace. They didn't know why you were flying to Boston in the middle of the night, but now they’ve pieced it together. They’re setting up a perimeter around the hospital."
Lauren felt her knees buckle. She grabbed the edge of the plastic consultation table to keep from falling. Fifteen months ago, she had run away from New York precisely to escape this nightmare. She had traded a life of luxury, marble floors, and bulletproof glass for a cramped, drafty Boston apartment, all because she wanted her child to grow up with scraped knees from playground slides, not shrapnel wounds.
"Giovanni," she gasped, her voice trembling. "What have I done? I brought them right to him."
Giovanni walked over to her. For a moment, Lauren thought he was going to strike her, or at least curse her for keeping his heir a secret. Instead, his heavy, warm hand came down on her shoulder, gripping her with a fierce, unexpected intensity.
"Look at me, Lauren," he commanded.
She forced her eyes up to meet his. The anger she had seen earlier was still there, burning like embers, but it wasn't directed at her anymore. It was directed at the world outside the hospital windows.
"You saved his life by calling me," Giovanni said, his voice absolute. "If you hadn't, he would be dying of a fever without the proper medical history, and Valenti’s men would have taken him from your apartment without me ever knowing. You did the right thing. Now, let me do mine."
He turned back to Marco. "Bring Dr. Sullivan in here. Now."
Within seconds, the young doctor was ushered into the room, looking pale and thoroughly confused by the sudden influx of broad-shouldered men in tailored suits blocking the corridor.
"Mr. Moretti?" Dr. Sullivan stammered. "We're preparing the lumbar puncture for Luca, but—"
"Change of plans, Doctor," Giovanni interrupted, pulling a black titanium smartphone from his pocket. "My private medical transport plane is idling at Logan Airport. I have a specialized pediatric team from New York flying in as we speak. We are moving my son."
"Sir, with all due respect, the boy has a 103-degree fever and potential meningitis!" Sullivan protested, his professional duty overriding his fear. "Moving him right now could cause severe neurological stress. It’s highly dangerous."
Giovanni stepped closer, towering over the physician. "What is more dangerous, Doctor? A bumpy ride in an armored vehicle, or a crossfire between the Moretti family and the Valenti cartel in your emergency room? Because within twenty minutes, this hospital is going to become a war zone."
Dr. Sullivan swallowed hard, looking at Lauren for confirmation. She could only nod, tears streaming down her face. She knew the names. The Valentis were the rival faction that had broken the truce just before she left Giovanni. They were ruthless, known for targeting families to settle scores.
"Alright," Sullivan breathed. "But I’m coming with you in the ambulance. I won't let a patient leave my care under these conditions without monitoring the IV lines."
"Good," Giovanni said, a grim smile touching his lips. "Marco, clear the freight elevator. We don't use the main lobby. Lauren, get Luca’s things. We leave in two minutes."
As Lauren rushed to the crib, picking up the small diaper bag and wrapping Luca in an extra thermal blanket, she watched Giovanni step out into the hallway. He was barking orders into his phone, activating safe houses, calling in reinforcements from New York, and setting up a decoy convoy to distract the Valenti scouts.

Despite the terror clawing at her throat, a strange, forgotten feeling washed over her: safety. For seven months, she had carried the crushing weight of single motherhood completely alone. Every midnight fever, every financial worry, every moment of sheer panic had been hers and hers alone to bear. Now, the heavy artillery had arrived.
But as she looked at Luca’s pale, sweat-slicked face, she knew the danger had only just begun. The secret was out. The Mafia King knew he had a son, and so did his deadliest enemies.
