Chapter 4 - The Bloodline Covenant

The private medical clinic in upstate New York didn't look like a hospital. It was a sprawling, heavily guarded estate nestled in the hills of Westchester, disguised as a luxury wellness retreat. In reality, it was a state-of-the-art trauma facility owned exclusively by the Moretti family—a place where wounds could be treated away from the prying eyes of the law and rival syndicates.
By 3:00 a.m., Luca was settled into a sterile, private room. The spinal tap had been completed, and the results brought an immense wave of relief: it wasn't bacterial meningitis, but rather a severe, acute viral infection coupled with an aggressive ear infection. Dangerous, but highly treatable with the intensive IV antibiotics and fluids he was now receiving.
The fever had finally broken, dropping to a manageable 99.4 degrees. Luca lay sleeping peacefully in a high-tech crib, his breathing deep and steady, his tiny hand hooked up to a small pulse oximeter that beeped a rhythmic, comforting lullaby.
Lauren sat in a plush armchair next to the crib, her hand resting through the bars, her thumb gently stroking Luca’s soft knuckles. She hadn't washed her hair or changed her clothes, but the sheer relief of seeing her boy sleep without pain made her feel lighter than she had in days.
The door clicked open, and Giovanni stepped in. He had changed into a fresh black shirt, the top buttons undone, his sleeves rolled up to reveal the intricate black tattoos that wrapped around his forearms—symbols of loyalty, death, and the Moretti crest.
He stood at the foot of the crib, staring down at the sleeping child. The silence stretched between them for a long time, heavy with a year and a half of unsaid words, broken promises, and hidden truths.
"He looks like you," Lauren whispered, breaking the silence. "When he’s angry, he knits his brows the exact same way you do."
Giovanni didn't smile. He slowly walked around the crib, stopping right beside her chair. He looked down at her, his expression unreadable. "Why did you run, Lauren?"
Lauren closed her eyes, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "You know why, Giovanni. Look at tonight. Look at what happened within two hours of you finding out he exists. Bullets, car crashes, helicopters, private jets. I didn't want this life for him. I didn't want to look under my car for bombs every time I took my baby to the grocery store."
"You had no right to make that choice alone," Giovanni said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, vibrating whisper. "He is a Moretti. His blood makes him a target whether he lives in a penthouse in Manhattan or a slum in Boston. By hiding him, you left him unprotected. If the Valentis had found him before I did, they would have used him to break me. They would have killed him just to watch me bleed."
"And what would you have done if I stayed?!" Lauren snapped, standing up to face him, her eyes flashing with the same fire that had allowed her to survive the last fifteen months alone. "You told me yourself, Giovanni! The last night we were together, after your uncle’s funeral, you looked me in the eyes and said that children are liabilities. You said anyone in your position would be a fool to bring a child into this world. I was already three weeks pregnant then, Giovanni. I hadn't told you yet. What was I supposed to think? I thought you would hate him. I thought you would make me get rid of him, or worse, keep him locked in a cage like a prisoner!"
Giovanni froze. The words seemed to physically strike him, his dark eyes widening slightly as the memory of that grief-stricken, booze-soaked night came rushing back.
He closed the distance between them, trapping her against the armrest of the chair. He didn't touch her, but his presence was overwhelming. "I said those things because I was drowning in blood, Lauren. My uncle had just been executed in his own driveway. I was terrified for you. I thought that if I kept you close, if I gave you a child, I would be signing your death warrants. I wanted to protect you from my world by pushing you away. I never imagined... I never dreamed you were already carrying my blood."
He looked away, his jaw clenching so hard the muscle ticked. He reached into the crib, his massive, scarred index finger gently brushing against Luca’s tiny palm. Instinctively, even in his sleep, the baby’s fingers curled around Giovanni’s hand, holding on tight.
Giovanni’s chest rose and fell in a ragged breath. The sight of the tiny child gripping his finger seemed to shatter the final remnants of the cold mafia boss, leaving behind a man completely consumed by a primal, paternal instinct.
"He is my son," Giovanni said, his voice thick with an emotion Lauren had never heard from him before. "He is the only pure thing left in my life. I swear to you, Lauren, by the soul of my mother, no one will ever hurt him. Not the Valentis, not the commission, no one. But to keep him safe, the world needs to know exactly who he belongs to."

Lauren felt a chill run down her spine. "What do you mean?"
Giovanni turned back to her, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute, terrifying permanence. "The divorce is void, Lauren. Tomorrow, my lawyers will file the paperwork to nullify it based on fraud—you concealed an heir. You are coming back to the estate. You are moving back into my house, under my protection, as my wife. We are going to become a family, whether you like it or not. Because it is the only way Luca survives the war that is coming."
